My only child who is 25 was the victim of an attempted hi -jacking on the 21st March 2006 at 7 am on a public holiday when the streets were relatively empty. As he stopped at a set of red traffic lights a truck stopped behind him and two black men with guns aproached the car from the rear. Because the windows were closed the one black man held a gun to his head on the other side of the window while the other smashed the passenger window and attempted to get into the passenger side seat. My son realised that if he did absolutely nothing he would be killed. He worked out that because the car was already in first gear that he had more chance of living if he put his foot flat on the accelerator and tried to get away. Two shots rang out
shattering the drivers window and narrowly missing my sons head. The police refused to list this as a hi-jacking because they say my son never got out of his car . I hear that the foreigners are well aware of the hi-jacking statistics and because of this the authorities have split the category into three different categories. This was went down on record as an "attempted armed robbery"and needless to say no one has been arrested. I would not be surprised if the attempted armed robbery statistics and some other arbitrary category statistics have increased.

WTF are those idiots that run our justice system thinking? If they try to take your car while you are in it it is obviously a hijacking attemp.Do they honestly believe that armed robbery incidents scare people less than hijackings?

They shot to kill him. Is that a attempted armed robbery? It should be attempted muder ffs.

Attemped armed robbery really sounds very light for what they did. COngratulations on your son surviving Mr. woever runs crimeexpo

So when one of the F@#%#R took the keys out of the ignition while another was saying I will shot you if you dont give me that cell phone and then took it away from the passager that was in the front seat of my car, I grabbed the keys back and got out the car by which time the barstards were 200 meters down the street.
What would you call that?
Sunday picnic i guess:mad:

Its tragic, but the I feel the police are right -

the hijacking consisted of -

Attempted Armed Robbery
Common Assault
Attempted Murder
Assault with intent to do grevious bodily harm.

It cant be a hijacking due to the reason that no vehicle was taken - maybe the theives wanted to kidnap the driver, or take the drivers wallet? The Police cant assume that the asailants wanted the car.

But none the less... a hijacking by any other name - is still a hijacking..

RichardP using that logic, that no car was taken
It wasn't an Attempted Armed Robbery or Attempted murder because nothing was Taken and no one was murdered

RichardP's logic and yours are poles apart, maybe you need to understand the meaning of the word "Attempted".

ok, so i got the guy in my sights i pull the trigger, if the bullet had hit he would have died (probably) but i missed, so its not attempted murder.
it was an accident? they have to prove intent? motivation? before its classified as attempted murder.

Its going to come to it some day when all cars in south africa come standard with bullet proofing.

Was talking to my dad the other day and he said something interesting. If we in SA used the only armoured cars from the army, the mine proof ones, with a couple of .50 cal guns on it, to transport money i think cash in transit heists will go down. Cos you would have to be insane to go up against an armoured car with machine guns on it. And i am sure driving a car into it wont knock it over or make it crash. just an idea, use dont use it it up to you.

I still however maintain the idea, that if we removed phsyical money from SA it would reduce crime. Have like in NZ where you dont have to carry cash you just need your debit card. The great thing there is you only get charged for using your card, after something like the 20th transaction, and even then its like 15 cents.
