Hi

I am considering getting an ATI 5770 card but not keen getting a new psu at the moment.

My current PSU is the Gigabyte Superb 550

http://www.gigabyte.com.tw/Products...ec.aspx?ProductID=2795&ProductName=Superb 550

Psu Details

AC INPUT 115Vac 10A 60Hz,230Vac 6A 50Hz
TYPE ATX 12cm
PFC Non PFC
DC OUTPUT +3.3V 22A +5V 25A +12V1 18A +12V2 18A -12V 0.5A +5Vsb 2.5A

Max Combined Wattage 165W 360W 6W 12.5W
431.5W 18.5W
450W
Peak wattage 550W

The other components the PSU powers is 1 x 320GB sata HDD,1 x 1TB sata hdd, dvd/cd drive, 2 x 2GB ddr2 800 ram, Intel Core 2 duo e8400 - 3.00Ghz

Thanks

no problems. Quad core 9950 BE, Saphire 5850, 4gb ddr800, 2x 500gb, 1x ipod, 1x external 500gb, 1x dvd writer,1x cellphone,1x printer on a 500W

It'll work :) I also ran my Quad core + HD5770 on a 460W with 4G DDR3 Ram, 4HDDs, 6 x 120MM fans

Thanks all 8-)
I keep on hearing that its not just how high your Watts are but more importgantly yours amps

The 5770 sips power.

Not so sure i agree with that one.

The Radeon HD 5770's power consumption levels were about what we were expecting. The idle consumption was a little higher than we would have wanted, that said, with a load result of 284 watts (for the complete system) the Radeon HD 5770 uses considerably less power than the Radeon HD 4870 and GeForce GTX 260 graphics cards.

Check the test system used, the 5770 looks very light on power.

You are brave.
Respect!

I got a Coolermaster 460W RS-460-PCAR-A3 here in my PC Powering:
Intel Q9300 2.5Ghz Quad, ATI HD4870 512MB, 2x2GB DDR2-800, 3HDDs, DVDRW, Stiffy Rom, 120mm + 80mm fan

Now pop this into the following website: http://extreme.outervision.com/psucalculatorlite.jsp
It is a nice website that gives you a fairly accurate Recommended Minimum PSU Wattage rating of sorts. I just overquoted my specs, put in 100% full load with 20% capacitor aging and it just told me that I need a PSU that puts out a minimum of 460W. I'm quite safe. I know I don't have much headroom for upgrading, but I knew that since the day I got this 460W. Quite happy with it.

I ran a 5770 on a generic 500w power supply which was also supporting 5 hard drives

A lower watage quality power supply will always be better than a higher spec'd no-name unit. Quality PSU's tend to be able to handle load better, as they use better components. They also handle spikes in load better.

no problems. Quad core 9950 BE, Saphire 5850, 4gb ddr800, 2x 500gb, 1x ipod, 1x external 500gb, 1x dvd writer,1x cellphone,1x printer on a 500W

You run a printer off your PSU? Impressive.

Yep, 550W is overkill. I run my Quadcore + 4870 on a 460W PSU.

My GF's PC is running of a generic 450w PSU.And she's running Q6600,Foxconn SLI Mobo,6gb RAM,2x DVD writers,3x 320 SATA HDD's,Gaming Case with 4x 120mm Fans,Zalman CPU Cooler and 2x 9800 gt's without any problems.......;)

Skimp out on a quality PSU and sooner or later you'll regret it. when it dies it will take out at least one component with it and if that doesn't happen should you get a brown out or some irregular power to the unit it'll die and probably offer no protection to your components as well. Also an overloaded Power supply degrades at a significantly higher rate than a PSU with a matched load. You increase Capacitor ageing considerably by doing that and what was a 400Watt PSU ends up giving out 300 Watts or less at best. A good Power supply is worth it because you buy once and use it for 5 years or longer.

As for the original question, your PSU is just fine ;)
