Audi A1 (Gen 2)

2018 Audi A1 revealed with racy new look and advanced cabin tech

Sportier A1 will draw heavily on high-tech safety and convenience kit

Audi will take the fight to the hot-selling Mini with the new A1 Sportback, which will be packed with technology, safety kit and the brand’s latest premium features in a bid to make it the most generously equipped supermini on sale.

The second-generation A1 will arrive in November with the aim of drawing new and young customers to the brand. The outgoing A1 is Audi’s third-best-selling model in the UK. It has been a consistent seller for Audi across Europe, too, with annual sales in the region only once dipping below 90,000 units since it was launched in 2010. But with rivals such as the Mini achieving more than double that figure (it sold in 215,549 units last year), Audi has yet to tap into the full sales potential of this segment.

The new A1, the smallest model in Audi’s range, has been given a dose of sporting design, with nods to the brand’s Quattro rallying heritage, including a single-frame front grille and three flat bonnet slits that reference the original 1984 Sport Quattro.

Like its Volkswagen Group MQB A0 platform siblings, the VW Polo and Seat Ibiza, the new A1 comes exclusively in five-door form and has grown in size (it’s now four metres long) to increase cabin space, particularly in the rear, and add 65 litres of luggage capacity.

Power is provided by a choice of turbocharged TFSI petrol engines, with no diesel offered. There will be a 94bhp 1.0-litre three-pot and 1.5-litre and 2.0-litre four-cylinder units offering up to 197bhp.

A six-speed manual gearbox is standard, with a seven-speed S tronic automatic 'box optional. The most potent 197bhp model, the 40 TFSI, gets a six-speed S tronic transmission as standard.

Later, the A1 will be offered with a natural gas engine in mainland Europe, but not in the UK. A 250bhp all-wheel-drive S1 is due to arrive in 2019.

The new A1 can be specified with optional adaptive damping and top models are offered with firmer sports suspension.

As standard, the car gets a 10.25in all-digital instrument cluster and a multi-function steering wheel. With the exception of the entry-level model, A1s come with a centre console touchscreen of 8.8in or, in top models, 10.1in. These MMI systems feature touch-operated handwriting recognition technology taken from the range-topping A8. There’s also more advanced voice control technology.

The sat-nav system will feature an internet-connected location search, including Google's search engine or Google Maps. With the MMI Plus package, there will also be live traffic updates.

Along with a DAB radio, there’s online smartphone functionality, including Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, as well as LTE tech to boost a phone’s signal via the car’s antenna. Entertainment is topped off with a choice of two high-quality audio systems, the bigger of which is a 560W Bang & Olufsen 11-speaker set-up that, Audi claims, is unrivalled in this segment.

Additionally, the A1 comes with a raft of driver assist features, including pre-sense radar-based technology that can recognise cars, cyclists and pedestrians, even in fog, to offer automatic accident mitigation. The same radar technology enables adaptive speed cruise control that works at up to 124mph and can bring the car to a stop. The car is also available with a reversing camera, parking sensors and an automatic parking system.

The new A1’s starting price could jump to around £16,500, bringing it close to the Mini, which starts from £16,605 in five-door form. Expect to pay more for a special launch edition, which will come with bespoke bronze 18in wheels and tinted lights.

New Audi S1 due in 2019 with 250bhp

New hot hatch is expected late next year with a higher-powered version of the Volkswagen Group’s turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine

A turbocharged 250bhp engine and four-wheel-drive traction will make the next Audi S1 the fastest and most powerful car in its class.

Expected in late 2019, the second-generation S1 will use a higher-powered version of the Volkswagen Group’s EA888 turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine. Combined with a Haldex-style quattro system, this should enable the S1 to trim several tenths from the 5.9sec 0-62mph time of its five-door predecessor.

The new S1 will also benefit from the enhanced structural rigidity provided by the new A1’s MQB A0 platform. This is stronger than the old car’s PQ25 underpinnings and uses 27% ultra-high-strength composites in the bodyshell.

Although Audi has yet to confirm the next S1, Autocar understands that it's set for sale because it acts as an effective halo product to lure younger buyers to the brand. Much of the success of this philosophy can be seen in the wider range of the new A1, which is far sportier even in standard trim.

The A1's exterior designer, Jürgen Löffler, told Autocar that Audi’s rallying heritage inspired the look of its new supermini.

The S1 is therefore expected to receive more Quattro-esque features as well as a larger rear wing, and white wheels are under consideration.

Say hello to the new (second-gen) Audi A1 Sportback

Audi has finally taken the wraps off its new A1 Sportback, with the second generation of Ingolstadt’s premium hatchback gaining a striking new design.

Now offered exclusively in five-door Sportback guise, the new model measures 4 030 mm long, 1 740 mm wide and 1 410 mm tall. Luggage capacity has increased by 65 litres to a claimed 335 litres, a figure that grows to 1 090 litres with the rear seats folded down.

Up front, you’ll likely already have noticed the three prominent slits at the edge of the bonnet (as well as what Audi calls the “implied side air inlets”), which the Ingolstadt-based brand describes as “a homage to the Sport quattro, the brand’s rally icon from 1984”.

In S line specification, the A1 Sportback gains larger air inlets, additional sill trims and a larger rear wing, while the range-topping (for now, at least) turbocharged 2,0-litre engine boasts twin tailpipes.

As has become the fashion, the new A1 Sportback will be offered in optional two-tone guise, with the roof finished in a contrasting colour from the A-pillar to the rear spoiler. The side-mirror caps, the front lip and the side sills will also be available in a contrasting hue.

Inside, the new A1 will feature a digital instrument cluster with a high-resolution, 10,25-inch display as standard, while the brand’s nifty virtual cockpit will be optional.

And engines? Well, Audi simply says there will be a choice of TFSI engines (from a 1,0-litre three-cylinder to 1,5- and 2,0-litre four-pots) with outputs ranging from 70 kW to 147 kW. A manual gearbox or a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission will be offered on most models, while the flagship A1 Sportback 40 TFSI will employ a six-speed dual-clutch as standard.

2019 Audi A1 Revealed

This is the all-new Audi A1, well, most of it. The images and details give us a good idea of what to expect from the new Audi A1, both inside and out.

The Audi A1 is the cheapest way to get into the Audi brand. Riding on the same platform which underpins the new Volkswagen Polo, the new Audi A1 is radically different in the visual stakes when compared to the outgoing model.

Physically, it's almost as high as the outgoing car but is 6 cm longer and 3 cm wider. The Audi engineers have worked their magic and the wheelbase is 9 cm longer, increasing the boot space and rear legroom. Audi claims the boot can hold 335 litres and when the seats are folded down, capacity is increased to 1 090 litres. Audi says there are new alloy wheel designs and these range from 15- to 18-inches in size.

Inside, fans will find a massive upgrade to the Audi A1 interior. The base-spec A1 features a large 10.25-inch digital dashboard and multifunction steering wheel. There are said to be three different interior trim lines available. Naturally, customers will be able to option their Audi A1 to the max with niceties like LED headlamps, S Line body kits, sportier seats, more potent audio systems and more safety spec. There's also plenty of customisation options and buyers will be able to order contrasting colours for the roof and mirrors.

In terms of engines, there will be many engines on offer, ranging from a 1.0-litre three-cylinder motor, a 1.5-litre four-cylinder engine, and a 2.0-litre four-cylinder powerplant. Outputs range from 70 kW to 147 kW, with the option of either a manual gearbox or seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox. There are also three different suspensions on offer, including a sports suspension and a sports suspension with adjustable damping.

We'll have more information and details on the 2019 Audi A1 soon.

Audi ups its compact hatch game with all-new A1

Audi’s second-generation A1 Sportback, officially out this week after weeks of speculation and teasers, is longer at 4030mm and wider (1740mm) than its predecessor, but only 1410mm high, with chunky styling that echoes the Ur-quattro and Sport quattro, especially in profile, with a few details that hark back to the iconic 1984 Sport quattro rally car.

But this is now, and a wide, low single-frame grille, wing-shaped LED daytime running lights and wide, forward-sloping C pillars make the Sportback look like it’s raring to go even when it's standing still.

And go it should - with a choice of TFSI turbopetrol motorvation ranging from a 70kW 1.5-litre three-cylinder to 1.5 and two-litre fours, each with direct injection and a particle filter. You get to choose between six-speed manual or seven-speed S tronic dual-clutch transmission - except on the flagship 40 TFSI derivative, where a six-speed S tronic cogset is standard. Audi makes no mention of diesel options as yet.

‘The sportiest interior in the compact class,’ was the design brief, according to Audi, so the new A1 has a digital instrument cluster as standard, with the centre stack and optional MMI touchscreen tilted towards the driver at a 13 degree angle, while black trim panels tie the air vent strip on the passenger side, the centre console and the door panels visually together.

The basic version has an all-digital instrument cluster with a high-resolution, 26cm display and a multifunction steering wheel, while the optional virtual cockpit displays everything from navigation arrows to an animated navigation map, infotainment (including online services) and even some of the driver assistance system graphics.

These include lane departure warning, using corrective steering interventions and warning vibrations and pre sense front, which uses a radar sensor to recognises critical situations - other vehicles, crossing pedestrians or cyclists - ahead of the car, and warns you with a visual and acoustic warning, then a short jolt of the brakes and, if you don’t react, brakes the car to a standstill.

Adaptive speed assist uses the same radar to maintain the right distance to the vehicle ahead; on S tronic models it’ll brake right down to a stop in heavy traffic - and then follow when the car ahead starts moving again. A rear camera is standard, as are front and rear parking sensors, and park assist will find you a suitable parking spot and steer the A1 into (and out of) it.

Even the basic radio has Bluetooth connectivity, while the MMI radio plus has a 22cm touchscreen that also recognises fingertip handwriting, while the top configuration MMI navigation plus features a 25cm touchscreen.

Three interior trim options - Advanced, Design Selection and S Line - allow you to colours and materials; standard or sports seats are available, each with optional seat heating; the sports seat have manual height adjustment, deep side bolsters and two-way lumbar support to hold you gently but firmly in place during what Audi likes to call ‘spirited’ driving.

Thanks to separately mounted springs and dampers on the rear torsion beam suspension, the space between the rear towers is exactly a metre, increasing luggage capacity by 65 litres to 335 litres with the rear seats up and 1090 litres with them folded.

New Audi S1 on the way with more grunt and AWD – report

The new, second-generation Audi A1 Sportback has only just been revealed, but already there are reports that a high-performance Audi S1 flagship is on the way, complete with all-wheel drive and a meaty 186 kW.

According to Autocar, the new S1 Sportback is scheduled to arrive late in 2019, boasting the Volkswagen Group’s familiar EA888 turbocharged 2,0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine tuned to deliver more than its does in the Golf GTI Performance, and sending this oomph to all four corners.

The report suggests that with a Haldex-style quattro system and additional power (about 16 kW more than the outgoing model, if the above estimate proves accurate), the new version of Ingolstadt’s baby hot hatch should be a smidgen quicker from standstill to 100 km/h than its 5,9-second forebear (which is no longer offered in South Africa).

Jürgen Löffler, the man responsible for the new A1’s exterior styling, told Autocar that the brief was to make the standard version the “sportiest car in its class”, which bodes well for this rumoured S1.

“You could say we sent the new A1 to the gym, because the outgoing car looks a little bit round in comparison. The new platform’s proportions have helped this a lot. It’s become lower, wider, longer, with shorter overhangs. So the base was already much better proportionally,” Löffler told the British publication.

According to the report, the Audi S1 will build on the standard A1’s newfound rally-style appearance with an even more aggressive body kit and a larger rear wing.

All-new A1

If this is what an 'all-new' car from Audi looks like, a refresh will probably consist of a pine cone hanging off the rear-view mirror and new seatbelt buckles.

In all seriousness it looks a lot better than the outgoing model which looked a bit soft and just 'meh'. I just wish their cars weren't so derivative and bland to look at.

Get ready for a 186kW hot-performing Audi S1

Audi’s new A1 Sportback has just made its debut this week, and already there’s talk of a hot S1 version that will pack around 186kW of power - giving true meaning to the term "dynamite comes in small packages".

With the flagship version of the standard A1 powered by a 1.4-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine mustering 147kW, the S1 will reportedly get a more potent two-litre turbo under its bonnet, along with all-wheel drive. This should allow it beat the 5.8 second 0-100km/h sprint time of the current S1, which was sold in South Africa for a number of years before being discontinued.

Audi hasn’t confirmed it but the new S1 is expected to debut overseas in late 2019.

Styling details are also still under wraps, but expect the car to get some sporty trimmings including bigger wheels and a larger roof spoiler.

The new A1 is already more masculine looking than the car it replaces, being longer and wider, with chunky styling that harks back to the iconic Ur-quattro and Sport quattro rally car of the 1980s. It has an extra large trapezoidal grille and wing-shaped LED daytime running lights.

Inside, Audi’s smallest hatch has acquired the latest technology including an optional Virtual Cockpit digital instrument panel, a 25cm touchscreen infotainment system, and driver aids such as lane-departure warning, pre-collision assist, and adaptive cruise control.

Apart from more passenger space in the enlarged cabin, the boot has also grown by 65 litres to 335 litres.

The A1 was launched in Germany this week with three trim options - Advanced, Design Selection and S Line - all with their own interior colours and materials. The different trim grades also affect the exterior, with the side air inlets, lower sections of the front and rear bumpers, the diffuser and the rear spoiler all available in various configurations. The S Line gets sporty glamour in the form of bigger air inlets, extended sill trims, a larger rear wing and dual tailpipes.

The new Audi A1 is under consideration to go on sale in South Africa in the second quarter of 2019, with the hot-performing S1 likely to follow suit at a later date.

Audi RS1 And RS1 Clubsport Quattro Speculatively Rendered

The minute a new car is revealed the digital artists jump on it to ‘reveal’ different potential variants of the new model and leading the pack is X-Tomi Design.

Most recently they took the new Audi A1 Sportback and turned the digital wick up a notch with range topping versions in the form of a RS1 and RS1 Clubsport Quattro.

Don’t get your hopes up too high just yet as it seems highly unlikely any of these design exercises will ever come to life. Still, the speculative renders are a good “what if.”

The chances of seeing a RS1 Sportback are rather slim considering the Audi Sport brand has promised to focus on SUVs for the expansion of its RS portfolio. If that doesn’t excite you enough, then the little German has been previewed in a hardcore Clubsport Quattro variant in the same vein as the bonkers 500 horsepower 2011 A1 Clubsport Quattro concept.

WATCH: Here's what the new SA-bound Audi A1 Sportback is all about

The new Audi A1 Sportback, also dubbed the 'Supermini', is packed with the latest features and boasts impressive styling cues.

It also shares a platform with the likes of the Volkswagen Polo and Seat Ibiza - keeping things close knit and in the family.

Audi South Africa says the second-generation A1 Sportback will arrive locally during the second quarter of 2019.

Ticking all the boxes

This is no ordinary car with a number of features that can be customised, as the new version aims to build on the success of its predecessor.

Ever since its introduction to the market 8 years ago, the model, also dubbed the 'Supermini', has been a success with well over 830 000 units sold to date.

Everything from the RS inspired front grille to the revised taillights shows that the car means business.

It also comes in a range of petrol engines each producing power outputs from 70 to 146kW.

Take a look at the new Audi A1 Sportback in base spec

When the second-generation Audi A1 Sportback was revealed back in June, the Ingolstadt-based automaker naturally showed off the new model in S line specification, complete with sporty body kit and big alloys. But now that Audi has launched its online configurator in Germany, we have our first look at the base-spec version of the A1.

From the outside, the so-called “poverty spec” A1 Sportback is easy to spot. You’ll quickly notice the 15-inch steel wheels (covered by plastic covers and wrapped in high-profile 185/65 rubber), basic halogen headlamps (rather than the LED items on posher derivatives) and the basic black plastic trim up front.

Round back, the lower bumper treatment is quite plain and the roof spoiler far more restrained that of the S line version, while the base model also does without LED tail-lamps. Still, it’s inside that you’ll find what is likely the biggest surprise.

In Germany, this entry-level Audi – with its seats trimmed in fabric and no leather for its steering wheel – seemingly does without a radio. Take a look at the accompanying image of the cabin and you’ll see a black plastic covering in the centre of the facia where an infotainment screen would normally live (plus, a similar treatment for the areas that would usually house door speakers).

The price for this basic model in Germany? Well, with the cheapest paint (and an 85 kW three-cylinder unit mated to a six-speed manual) specified, the five-door A1 starts at €21 150 (that’s a little over R380 000 at the current exchange rate). Of course, we’re highly unlikely to see such a bare-bones model when the A1 makes its way to South Africa…

Second-generation Audi A1 production kicks off in Spain

Audi has announced the start of production of its new A1 Sportback in Spain, with the second-generation hatchback interestingly being built at Seat’s factory in Martorell.

The new A1 will be built exclusively at the Spanish plant, which also produced the outgoing Q3 (starting in mid-2011 for a total of more than 800 000 units). The first-generation A1 was made in Brussels, while the new Q3 is produced in Hungary.

The latest A1 will be produced across two shifts on the plant’s revamped “Line 3” using the Volkswagen Group’s latest MQB A0 platform.

In addition to the new A1, the Martorell factory also builds the fifth-generation Seat Ibiza as well as the new Seat Arona.

“Over the last years, the Martorell plant with its highly qualified employees has produced our Audi Q3 and made this model a great success,” said Peter Kössler, board member for production and logistics at Audi.

“The plant has gained a lot of experience with our extremely quality oriented Audi production system. Therefore, Martorell is for us the ideal place to manufacture our new Audi A1, one of our strategic pillars in this segment,” he added.
