There are 2 types kkl and can.

There are chinese copies of the kkl for about R250 on bid or buy, if you want a legit one look here.

The kkl ones cant read all the codes, I have seen a few can cables floating around ebay that are chinese copies but I have yet to buy one and try it, they seem to go for around R600.

They usualy have software on the disk that comes with the cable.

I came across the OBD2 ELM 327 http://www.bidorbuy.co.za/jsp/tradesearch/TradeSearch.jsp

What an awesome product and for the price its not that bad.

If you want to scan and change some of the more obscure things you will want something that supports the ross tech software, while the others may work the ross tech software is what the dealers use so it can do a lot more things (like prime and start the haldex pump if you have a quattro). I got one of these but it only works properly on older audi and vw and is a pain to setup. This one works fine for me to reset codes on my 2001 audi s3 but my friends 2007 audi a3 only allows me to scan the engine.

Get the original from Ross tech directly. I've used some of the others and headaches. Plus lifetime software updates to support the cable.

there are no guarantees with the cheap cables unfortunately, i have read of people getting cables like the one i ordered but still needing to buy a licence cause the cracked ross tech that comes on the disk doesnt work cause its an old version. I have no idea about OBD2 ELM 327, some of the "universal" software you get with these readers work some dont. a quick google shows lots of people having issues, so if you cant fiddle and look through loads of threads you are better off getting the proper cable

+1 on the cracked software that comes with cheap cables. Been there, done that.

UPDATE, UPDATE!!! Just to let you know that I got me the OBD2 ELM 327 (Bluetooth unit) and it worked perfectly, I can basically do everything and here'e the best part.... from my android phone via the app called Torque.... anyways I was able to check my fault code which was P0101 and then I cleared it and just like that BOOM the fault was gone
