Good day all

I have noticed that my gear is a bit still on cold start ups. But once the car reaches normal operating temperature all gears are smooth. Only the first and second gear are difficult to select on cold start up. I took the car for a service but they did not say anything about the gear being stiff. Is there anyone else who has ever experienced this? Is it normal or did you have it checked out? Know the costs involved?

Thank you in advance

Its normal on my car.I let the car warm up for a few minutes before driving it.It occurs during winter.During summer i dont have the problem

You're crazy. A car should be warmed up while being gently driven, and not while left idling while stationary.

But now I have been doing some research and from what I have gathered, most people went for an oil change and used thinner oil but no one mentions which but they say it comes from Audi. Have you taken your car to Audi and have them look at the gear? I am thinking of having mine checked.

No iam not crazy. My specific car is known for this issue.I dont drive an audi so iam not sure if its normal or not.Anyway when idling it seems to fix the problem.Doesnt happen often only when its been a cold evening and the car has been sitting outside all night.

yip agreed , but remmember the gears get stuck when changing to 2nd so i cant drive it in 1st gear.only option is idle.

Have you tried replacing the gearbox oil? Many manufacturers say that it lasts for the life of the car, but it's worth doing especially if the car is a few years old.

Yip done the gearbox oil

I had a very similar issue on my Audi A4 2004 1.8T 6 speed. Turned out it was the transfer box which had to be replaced. Total cost was approximately R5k at an independent mechanic if I remember correctly, as this was about 3 years ago. The charge included a new part from Audi SA so there may be savings possible by sourcing from a specialist scrapyard such as Four Spring in Edenvale.

I don't know which option to explore first... Change the transfer box? Change the gearbox? change the gearbox oil? These work shops charge an arm and a leg on labor for such work. But what I think I will do is go straight to Audi and ask them to diagnose the car for me.
