2004 Audi A4 1.8T has got a problem. When you accelerate to about 3000 rpm the car starts vibrating violently then stops at about 4000 rpm. I've had the wheels balanced and the car has just been back from a service at the dealership.

Any ideas?

When you say the car vibrates violently... you gotta "feel" where it could be coming from...

if the steering wheel vibrates - suspension and/or alignment issues
if you feel like the windows are vibrating... it could be that air is getting in somewhere and a standing wave is formed at a certain speed... kinda like that annoying feeling at speed with the rear windows down.
if the car feels unstable on the road - again... could be the shocks at a certain frequency of oscillation.

the fact that it only occurs at around 3000rpm could mean something to do with the turbo as it spins up... i can't remember if those turbos had speed variable vanes.

the fact that it starts at 3000 and stops at 4000 could also be a fuel management issue. That's the zone where the software for economy mode and sport mode have different fuel to air mix ratios at different throttle positioning...

Just spit balling here... need more info on what kind of vibration you experience.

I know the VW club forums are very active... why don't you mosey on there and ask some of those guys. But try and get more info.

Cv joints, control arm bushes, shocks, shock mountings, tie rods...
Start with control arm bushes if you only experiencing it when accelerating. Get a torch, get under the car, look for a round moulding running parallel to the length of the car, look for a break or tear, it might not be visible at first if you parked but its worth a look.
