Hi all. Currently in search of a solution. I want to output Audio from my TV to my surround system. But facing the following challenge.
The TV Audio out is either, HDMI, Optical and Stereo 3.5mm
The surround system is a Logitech Z506 which has no Digital inputs and I would like to use all 6 channels.

Can anyone recommend a solution that won't break the bank? Like a DAC that can go from Optical to 5.1 output either RCA or 3.5mm jacks?

The Logitech Z506 connects to a PC via a coax digital cable.
Each speaker in turn then connect to the subwoofer via an RCA cable.

You need something to convert the optical out of the TV to coax.
This should work https://reliablestore.co.za/product...02&sfdr_hash=5d640c562d46fdb93d3f67141597c300
That'll work but will just be stereo signal filling the 6 speakers. Would probably need a different box for frontL/frontR/front/rearL/rearR etc. if that's what op is after. Dunno.

Yeah but a single coaxial is just stereo aint it?
No.
Coax carries a full digital signal. If the signal has an encoded dolby digital soundtrack it will transport all of it.
The sub of the Logitech has the Dolby decoder and will split the signal to each speaker.

My bad on the coaxial. However I don't see a digital input on the sub so seems a bit moot.

Isn't going to happen, you need to upgrade your sound system.

Would this not work if the Digital Source being the TV optical Out. Going to the Optical In on this DAC. Then the RCA Outputs from the DAC to Z506?

I see it has no coax in.
Your only option is to connect it to a PC sound card it seems.

Problem is the Z506 has no RCA input just those five 3.5mm inputs, one for each speaker.

So why would it not work like this? 3.5mm to RCA cables are widely availableOption.png

Just google theres so many forums that say it is possible, I googled and saw aux in to aux tv
The problem is the Logitech does not have an on-board dolby digital decoder. Simply using aux from tv into the logitech will not give you 5.1 surround, just left and right stereo.

The simplest would be to buy an older pre-HDMI AVR and use RCA to 3.5mm cables. These can often be picked up use for R800 to R1000, the same as this below plus you have the option of video switching, multiple inputs etc:

If the TV has the Dolby surround built in, it is already sending the coding to the tv speakers, the aux will carry it to the external speakers and it wont need another digital decoder
The amp is possibly in the sub woofer, aux will send the Dolby coded sound to the amp the amp will carry it to the speakers

For surround sound the TV only has digital out. The speakers (sub with all the inputs) don't have digital in. You need conversion at some point.
