Hi,

I need some advice from you guys. I have a Philips HTS with a coaxial input but no optical input.

My droidtv is connected via HDMI to my TV and so is my PS4.

The audio out put from my TV comes from a headphone jack to a RC audio input on my HTS.

Now I want to connect the PS4's optical audio to my HTS coaxial in.

Is this possible and what will I need?

Secondly can I split the audio from the HDMI cable coming from the driodtv to a coaxial to input this into my HTS?

Do you get a type of connection where you can connect more than one coaxial cable to something that takes it to a single input on my HTS?

Thanks

I know little about audio, but it seems like a downgrade opting for coaxial input into the HTS (from PS4) than the existing HDMI ?

It is a downgrade, and you will have lipsync issues. The Audio will be a couple of seconds , at most, behind the video.

What coaxial is he referring to?

I'm guessing Coaxial S/PDIF. Whereas the PS4 and most modern equipment has S/PDIF Optical instead.

OP, you do get active converters, but they will usually introduce interference, I had one and you could clearly hear a soft buzz in the background. You might be able to get a better one but it will be expensive.

Would this affect the sound when playing games and will it convert the sound to DTS?

It doesn't convert the sound format at all, only the medium through which the signals travel. It takes the optical signal from the PS (laser pulses) and generates electrical pulses on the other side. Since both are digital they are just binary code so whatever the console sends out is the same information received by the sound system on the other side. No decoding or re-encoding.

The encoding to DTS or Dobly or whatever is still done by the console and decoding is only done by the receiver.

Edit: You need something like this

http://www.amazon.com/Digital-Optical-Toslink-Coaxial-Converter/dp/B000I98ZQY

In fact that's the exact model I had, but bought it in SA

Hi Hazelbag,

If all your devices are HDMI enabled, and you want to connect them to your stereo amplifier, you will need an audio extractor

Something like this -> http://www.avsupply.co.za/product_info.php/4x1-hdmi-switcher-with-toslink-digital-coaxial-port-p-671

If you only want to convert 1 HDMI enabled device, here are some more options

http://www.avsupply.co.za/product_info.php/hdmi-hdmi-analogue-adapter-p-57

http://www.avsupply.co.za/product_info.php/hdmi-audio-extractor-p-676

All my devices are HDMI but i want to get the audio from my PS4 to be on 5.1 so get audio via optical out and into coaxial in. Is this possible?

Not what he said at all, he wants to output an optical source into a coaxial input on the receiver (which I assume is surround rather than stereo). Your stuff just gets from HDMI to optical again.

Yes, I already told you how.... unless I have something wrong?

Hi @TJ99 i did see your post and thanks for the info. I dont mind paying a bit more as a HTS is more expensive and mine is still great.

@Avsupply thanks, thats what i am looking for. Will contact you after my holiday to het hold of one.

Just a quick question, if i get a new HTS instead and it has a HD input and plug the ps4 into this will the sound automatically be 5.1 or will i need to use an optical cable?

If you mean a new All-in-one Home Theater, it will probably have optical inputs, but if you mean a proper standalone receiver, it will definitely have HDMI inputs, so you'd just plug the HDMI sources directly to that and it plays the sound and sends video to the TV.

What is a good receiver and speakers? Or can i just get a receiver and connect mu speakers to it?
