August 1: Lower Prices AND quality?

Hello people,

I have noticed a significant decrease in the quality and performance of my ADSL (512) connection since August 1.

In July everything seemed to be ok, no crashes, no disconnections and speed was more or less constant, although I rarely (if ever) actually got the 512 I am paying for because, as you all know, Telkom provides the service on a "best efforts" basis.

However, since the begining of this month, I have had severe problems with my connection, it is very very sluggish, speed is nowhere near the 400-500 range and sometimes it drops as low as dial-up. I get constant disconnections and whenever I try to download software patches or updates, the download rates are effectively closer to dial-up than to an adsl connection.

Has anyone else had similar experiences?

Does anyone think that there is a parallel between the drop in prices and the drop in quality/performance or actual bandwidth?

Anyone has any ideas how to deal with or hopefuly solve this problem?

Your views, comments and suggestions will be appreciated!

Cheers! :D

They are trying to tell us that they HAVE the power ... and they will destroy our connectivity or maybe even disconnect altogether ....

OR

They have used up their entire bandwith trying to 'provide you with excellent service' and now the evil ISPs are hurting them by offering HUGE 30GB packages which people will use on the Uber-Fast 512k connections. So it's the fault of MyADSL users that they have bullied telkom and now the poor dears can not cope.

I'll leave it up to u to pick an option ...

Well ... I must say for me things are normal so to speak ... my P2P app still goes @ 38~41KB/s maybe it's a regional thing?

I wasn't going to say anything, but since you guys are on the topic...

I've definitely noticed a performance decrease as well, and I'm quite peeved.

Telescum's gone and thrown their toys out of their cot. They're sour.

Let me say no more. I am extremely bitter. :(

speed seems to be a bit crapish week days 8-20h ... but night time it is flying ...

no disconnections so far

My line speed also looks very good. I just got an Axxess 10GB account, and it flies.

Where are you? I'm also having strange problems...

see this thread: http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php?t=24879

I have also noticed a similar reduction in the speeds that I achieve on my 384K package.

Same thing here for me in Jhb, 128Kbit internet radio is unusable - just goes all choppy on a 512Kbit line.

Arf, Very strange indeed... would you mind posting the links to the test sites you used?

Thx! :)

try restoring your registry to an earlier date when it was working fine. it could be something that you've unknowingly downloaded. if it's still the same then you know that the fault isn't with your pc.

I use 2 pcs. one is my office laptop and nothing gets installed on it...no admin rights. And I get similar results on both. It seems as if Telkom has changed their shaping to allow http and nothing else...

yip since 1 Aug, its all goin so slooooow by me also. :(

i have logged an adsl fault today because of the speed since 1 august and telkom phoned me today and told me they have to increase their bandwith but dont know when that will be
