Aunt Upgrading Tomorrow (MTN AnyTime500)

Hello,

She is upgrading tomorrow. She used to pay R1000 or more per month so the lady bumped her up to AnyTime 500

But she doesn't know what phone to choose. The lady asked her to ask ME what phones to look out for, We should let the lady know of 3 possible phones that we would like. But unfortunately I am not so clued up with what is the latest and greatest phones.

Ideally the phones shouldn't really have to have the latest gimmicks because she doesn't use MXIT or Facebook on her cellphone..

But if should have a good Battery life. And good camera because she often sends MMS messages with pictures and a Mass of SMS messages.

Any help is appreciated thanks.
 
Good luck! These days all phones can reinvent the wheel, mxit and facebook, but you will have to charge them like every 5 minutes....All the best:-P
 
is she up to date with technology??? suggesting an android phone for example could be too much fr her to handle. what type of phones d she like? touch screen? physical keyboard? simple symbian phones??
 
she uses SMS and Camera (MMS)..

She is one of the older generation people who are still making vodacom and MTN rich by using SMS messages instead of mxit.


The phone will have to have good battery and maybe touch screen + Good camera.

Not too much to ask for client paying R1000 per month >.>
 
if she likes typing, and is old, i doubt touch is the way.

A blackberry is probably your best option in my opinion.

Ill suggest she ask for 2 Nokia E52s and a Bluetooth carkit!

That would be a nokia

she doesn't drive around very much.


I don't know if the handsfree kit would be of much use for her.

This is what I got from the store..

So it's down to the N97 Mini and the phones that they have in stock above.

Otherwise I would have to look into getting her a Sony Erricson but as someone already pointed out it might be best for the older generation to stick with one brand of phone.
 
How important is the camera to her? Does she want to take professional type shots and save them to her computer later, or does she just like to snap things and mms them? If the camera quality isn't that important (ie most of the pictures will be downsized to fit in an mms and then never be thought of again) then a cheapish nokia candy-bar type phone would do the trick and she can get a gift-voucher or something with the difference in the price.

oh so they do give you a gift voucher for the difference in price?

Its from MTN store I don't know if all of them operate the same.


She only takes snapshots and uploads them through mms as you said but I have hooked up her place so that she has wifi coverage all over her house and she can now access all the pics from any wifi storage device within range. So she can upload pics to facebook with ease.

She only wants a few things from her phone..

SMS, MMS, Good Battery Life, Good Camera, Good Signal Strength..

But I wonder if the N97Mini's qwerty keyboard will be a let down for her.

They used to, maybe just phone the specific shop she was at and find out what she will get if she buys a cheapish phone? Some stores have GPS's and DVD players and stuff that they offer you if your contract is worth more than your phone.

I don't think they are around anymore, but my old Nokia 6300 could do pretty much everything you are talking about, maybe whatever replaced it? If she uses facebook a lot something like the X10 mini Pro? Slide out keyboard and I think it is R200 a month at MTN... Just worried Android might be a bit too much for someone who isnt all that tech savvy.
 
We have decided on the Nokia X6

6Hours Talk time (3g Mode) Which I will turn off and she'll have 11hours 30 minutes talk time (2g Mode)
Gps with OVI Maps (Turn by turn voice navigation, save on the costs of a Garmin GPS - Less Clutter and is always with her no matter what car she chooses to drive with)
Stereo Headset (Free)

Very nice touch screen (new gimmick that she will enjoy rather than despise)
Karl Zeiss Optics with 30fps VGA video mode (Post High Quality clips on Facebook etc)
TV out (To share clips quickly and easily with the rest of the family)
WIFI (to use when calling via VOIP software on the phone)
Non Qwerty Keypad


Only thing I will have to do to it is install Skype and my auntie is ready to go.

I feel bad for not checking out SE / LG or blackberry alternatives but I think the phone which will have the best photo quality is Nokia, because they use the Karl Zeiss lenses on their phones. You're phone can be 200 megapixel but if there is no high quality lens front of the camera it won't take in as much light

I took a photo of my work today and was disgusted when I got home and put it on my pc, everything was so small and looked very far away. All because my camera (W995) doesn't have any decent lens on it. But I am looking into getting a Tripod stand + Optical Zoom lens from Ebay for just R200
