Australia plans first plain cigarette packets

and even, in the same article

Banning packet logos is the same as banning advertising. The packet is a miniature ad in itself. It's just another facet in the war on smoking.

Waaawaaawaaawaaaaa. Pete, I will not argue on medical issues that I have no idea about which you clearly have more knowledge about than I do. But I'd like to see the fiduciary evidence to back up your point on this one. Please...

It's akin to the ban on cigarette advertising. It's just an extension thereof. Why do you think anything sold is marked? Packet logos are small ads. If you're gonna ban TV ads, magazine ads and even remove names from F1 cars, why not ban the packets too?

Er, clearly your skills lie outside of the advertising realm. On a dailt basis (not in fine print btw) I read about the dangers of smoking. In fact I read them every single time I light a smoke. If you believe that that k@k puts me off smoking, then you're deluded. Don't get me wrong - if therere was some way to convince me that smoking will kill me in the next 10 years without a shadow of a doubt, then I might take you and your cronies more seriously. But to be honest, it has fsckall to do with you...

They are doing it but gradually. The aim is social engineering - they want to wean current smokers off cigarettes and reduce future numbers of smokers. Hopefully the market will be so small one day that the current tobacco corps will go out of business. You can't otherwise just ban smoking - you know very well that what happened during the US alcohol prohibition? Everyone continued to drink, just that criminals took over the distribution channels.

So what's the answer then? Limiting public exposure is just plain stupid if you have an inkling into the industry. Their revenues are not derived from people who "think it's cool" ffs...

Well the Islamic countries are doing a splendid job on banning alcohol Come to think of it we have our first Alcohol Free hotel in the Cape- The Coral

Bought so much booze in Egypt and Morocco it is ridicluous. Those who believe the "prohibition" states have it the right way are severeley demented in my books. Those who feel it is their moral duty to come tell me what a heathen I am, can go suck themselves a fat one and hopefully choke on it...

They should just tax it 100% lol... but +1 for the ausies...

EDIT : Wonder what chopper reed thinks now ha ha

Yeah well so did I but those countries are Western Tourist dependent. I'm referring to strict Islamic countries...chop chop stuff...places like Saudi and Iran.

There's enough evidence to show that tobacco cigarettes seriously damage health. There's no evidence to show that they have any possibly beneficial health function- unlike Alcohol- (in small amounts eg red wine) Therefore why should cigarettes be freely available? They should be banned outright.

This may or may not be targeted at you. Secondly you can't really say what puts your off or not because we humans follow subconscious cues - and advertising has been proven to work - why do they have product placement in films? Why have banners on MyBB? Why TV, print, radio?
Well you may say you don't buy that but making cigarette company names ubiquitous so that the Marlboro, Camel, Lucky Strike etc - I'm not a smoker yet I know all these names and more - may slowly cause fewer people to smoke - especially impressionable younger teens. Remember this is demographically based, you may just not be the target of it.

So you're saying no teens start to smoke because it looks cool?

The ban on booze there is easy because it reinforces what these people get in other ways. Their culture and religion is anti-alcohol and they grew up without it.
OK - misread your thing. Yes booze in Egypt - for foreigners and perhaps more secular Arabs.

1) Will they plan to take the logo off the cigarettes itself next?
2) Will this make counterfeit cigarettes harder to spot?

Nope. Marlboro will use a special triple toned red dyed tobacco and Camel will use a quadruple toned yellow dyed tobacco. The chinese will not be able to copy them.

Thanks. I always thought that the police had to have a smoker on their team who will test the product and can tell on the spot if it's fake or not.

Government should just ban cigarettes, give the cigarette companies a time frame to phase out the sale and production of tobacco for e.g. 5 years.

If you ask any smoker if they could wake up tomorrow and not crave another cigarette what do you think their response would be?

I have yet to hear a good reason for smoking.
