SA is looking at the bigger picture i.e. the world cup, the Aussies can protest all they want but it's totally up to us whether we want to send a full strength team to the Tri Nations or not. It's a toss up between sending our best and winning the Tri Nations but risk injury to them or send a second rate (yet competitive) side that'll gain experience and keep the big boys safe for the WC.

Because every team would like to become better. Playing against sub-standard teams doesn't help to achieve that, and just cheapens the match. SA could just as well have stayed home, would have had the same result. Why send a team you know will loose?

If the rugby team go to France after the President has signed the Sport Amendment Bill into law, that team will have to conform to the Act. If not, they will be in contravention of the law. If that happens, they will be stopped. When the Australian cricket team were supposed to play in Zimbabwe their prime minister said the team would not be allowed to go because there were no human rights there, and the team didn’t go.

Our government will do the same. We will take appropriate action by stopping them from leaving the country if necessary. We will hit them hard. People must understand we are a government and South Africa is not a banana republic. Rugby wants to have its own government. This country has only one government, led by President Mbeki.

Reading this thread has got me a little confused...is this a SA based forum or a Ozzie based one. I have never seen South Africans defend Australians like this before or is this a case of the lesser of two evils?
What the Australians did cannot be condoned, it was unsportsmanlike and arrogant, whoever's name is on the trophy. The fact that it was Madiba's name makes it even worse. What do the Australians have to be so arrogant about, it is not like they gave the "B" team such a huge drubbing. Did they forget that were 17-0 down? It was only the lack of experience and cohesion in a team that had not played together before. The positive spin on this is that we have depth and our World Cup chances look better. Even the game this weekend was positive, we only got a hiding when we were 1 man down.

Whatever the case, there is always an element of racism in every human, but the Australians had no reason to disrespect the trophy in this instance. Better teams have lost to Australia with a far higher margin and the Australians celebrated like they won the World Cup. This was an arrogant and stupid attempt at trying to make a point when the obviously had no reason to.

Just my 2 cents
 
I've read more of the article and here he has a go at Kallis. The ignorance and the massive chip on this guys shoulder is the size of table mountain.

Kallis demonstrates the depth of the hate and racism that exists. He is not doing anything new. But failure to sing the national anthem is an endemic thing.

Poor kallis, he's given the reason to SA cricket as to why he doesnt sing and they have accepted that. (something to do with his father)

It's selective hearing. Kallis can say the reason why he doesn't sing the anthem until he's blue in the face, Komphela's hearing receptors will only click if he hears the words 'black', 'racism' or 'apartheid'. It's sickening..
 
I wouldn't sing the anthem either because I'd be singing stuff about God which would be a contradiction to my belief system. That doesn't mean I don't support my country. I don't think that Kallis is being unreasonable.

Well what it boils down to is personal preference. You can love your country but who says you gotta sing the anthem to show that love? Just like the Kallis thing, these guys like Komphela just look for any small excuse to play the race card.
 
Yeah I get your point, basically just adding to it that there usually is an explanation that doesn't involve race :)

The reason is of importance. Even though Mandela is a big hero in SA, he is not a hero abroad, for ex in the States both white and black (african-american) people I came across had no idea or just a vague idea of who
Mandela was. So it's not like they turned down "God's" own cup or something, for them the name Mandela is not glorified with "the apartheid struggle" as for SA's or this writer. They were just concerned by the fact that possibly SA showed disrespect by sending an inferior side, or maybe they are just
racist - but as this guy shows (the writer of the article) he's just as racist,
so.....who cares?

I seem to remember Australia supporting anti-apartheid movements quite a bit. They were also behind the move to expel the country from the commonwealth weren't they?? More twaddle again from the ignoramus?
