Auto & General Insurance Spam calls

Can someone tell me how the hell those companies get my number and try to sell me some vehicle insurance, when I ALREADY have insurance on the vehicle?
Some rep at Auto and General in Midrand called me (Truecaller said it was a verified business), asked if I'm the owner of this car, blah, blah. I ended the call on good terms, declining the insurance.
I'm like, how the hell did you get this information?? I'm feeling that this information should only be available to me, and the insurer from which I took the insurance out from.

First time I'm getting a phone call like this.
Is this information not supposed to be protected under the POPIA act? I have been receiving calls from all over the place over this.

I opted for that last-year, but seems like the calls is picking up now again...

lets hope they do, as imagine you get somebody else "work" phone and all day you get people pestering you for "services"

If I am in a good mood, I enjoy these calls, I once had an insurance saleswoman on the line for around 5 minutes after firmly telling her in the beginning that she could never beat what I currently pay on my car insurance. She sounded deflated when she heard my response to asking how her quote compares to what I currently pay for my car insurance, which is R0.

Why would it be 12 months? I thought POPIA specifies that unless someone gives you permission to contact you are not allowed to.

OP claims he registers and gets calls still,
maybe you need to renew it or something?

I am sure there are many like him, I don't believe for a second that companies adhere to POPIA or no contact lists, etc. 100% all the time. My understanding is that without permission you can't contact and there is no time frame until you can contact unless given permission. I honestly don't know though, I did some POPIA training two years ago but I don't have an outward facing role in my everyday job so don't work with POPIA compliance or need to know it well.
