Which do you prefer?

I have no problem driving a manual, but I love auto gearboxes.

Only problem is that we don't get enough options in South Africa.

Why VW only has dsg in a few models really gets to me, if the Golf 6 2.0 tdi had a dsg I would buy it in a heartbeat.

If you are doing a lot of long distance with not so much traffic a manual would be better but if you sit in bumper to bumper traffic all day auto is the way. I got a new car 6 months ago and regret not going the auto route.

If I had found a decent auto when I was buying 2 months ago I would have jumped at it. Sadly the cars with auto boxes just aren't that readily available and when they are the price is normally higher....
Wish I drove an auto with all the traffic I sit in :(

i would have shouted manual some close to 12 months ago.

having experienced the gearbox in a 2.0T A5, I really can't even convince myself my gear changes would be smoother. especially when i have it in sports mode.

i even don't use the gear pedals as a result.

This. I find Audi gearboxes to be *super* smooth. In sports mode the car motors, but you can notice the gear changes. In drive mode the car is sex on wheels. I can't even notice when the car gears up and down.

From a car sales point of view, we are selling possibly two or three autos for every manual that goes out the door. The only exception is the WRX which is only available in manual and that is a good seller.

Nothing like driving a really nice Scooby with paddle shift!! ;)

With my Gti dsg the changes are so well timed, its like its connected directly to my brain. I love it. Ford shot themselves in the foot by not offering their "powershift" dual clutch on the ST.

The wife convinced me to go for the auto about 8 months ago. I also sit in lots of traffic (who doesn't?) and it is such a pleasure to drive.

edit
also has Steptronic, if you want to change gears yourself

I had a 6 speed rxi loved it to bits but recently switched over to a corolla with the MM-T clutch system. Must say I was sceptical at first but loving it now especialy when in "sport mode".

I had an auto and when getting a new car went for manual. What a mistake. Most of my driving is darting through the suburbs and side streets to avoid the traffic. 8 months later I bought the same car in Auto. Best thing I ever did.

My 1994 E320 is an automatic, love it. I think it helps that the car is powerful enough for the power losses to an automatic transmission to not really matter.

Got an automatic car with Steptronic (Focus) and thought I would use it often....and never really used it...normal auto is just so easy. Traffic is childs play.

I'd get dual clutch auto over a manual.

I doubt I'd take a stand auto, unless it had a fair amount of power
