Hope this is the best forum for my question

I need to find a low cost way to send a small volume of SMS’s automatically.
They are not being sent from a PC so email isn’t an option.

Quite some time back Vodacom had a service where a dial-up modem could call a number and send an SMS to a Vodacom phone with a very simple protocol, unfortunately this service is no more.

Can anyone recommend a device which is able to send four pre-programmed SMS messages triggered by contacts closing or possibly a simple GSM modem which has an RS-232 port and can be manipulated by simple AT commands.

Many thanks

There are a few options here,

Depending on what you need the system to action. Is it automated, does it connect to a PC. and what kind of volume.

You can still get good quality moderm if you look around but you can also get free apps for outlook and send mssg from your own cell phone

All you need to do if make sure you get a sim card with an SMS bundle, this will mean you will pay between 20 to 45 cents a mssg, depending on the networks operator you choose

If you have good volume you could always contact an aggregator for a direct SMS connection into Vodacom, MTN and Cell C

I was away over the prev long weekend, the power tripped and a full freezer defrosted. I'm wanting to get an SMS should the power trip. There are devices available costing upwards of around R1800, I'd prefer not to use a PC , rather program a small microcontroller to read an input and drive a modem. But if all else fails i may use an aincient laptop for project.
Do you have any other suggestions for a solution.
Thanks
