Holly molly! That DSG is quick! not just the acceleration but those shifts are at least three times faster than on my old 4 speed.

But of course, one would only do such a thing on a private road / airfield :whistling:
I saw you had it in sport auto mode, guess it would be quicker in manual (with skilled driver). It is a really nice comparison between two 1.8 cars with autoboxes as it is not hard to see which one cost 2.5 times more than the other, nor is it hard to see why - the DSG is proper fast
Edit : Wind noise at high speed should also be much lower in the Passat.

No, it won't.
Driver skill doesn't enter into it with a DSG box. It picks the shift points for optimum performance in S mode or for economy in D.

Some automatics can actually be push started - or at least tow/downhill started. Automatic Mercs have been able to do this since the 70s, maybe even earlier. The engine fires up when you pull the gear selector down to L at about 40 KM/H.

While on the topic - would do cars have gears that go way beyond legal speed limit? Surely a bunch of very short gears would be better for actual driving on streets - esp with the dual ones that you don't really feel shift.

Ignoring the race day & bragging aspect for a sec...

Yep, I am reading up a bit on that right now. Seems when you have that box in S mode it will be as quick as it will ever be, and by the looks of it that is beyond snappy. Only thing the sport mode does in my car is try to be in as low a gear as possible and slightly higher shift points. Gear changes are still rather relaxed in sport mode.

DSG is fantastic. The slowest part of the gearshift is matching the revs to the new in-gear engine speed.
It also can skip multiple gears... so cruising in 60th at 80, plant it, it drops to 3rd or 4th immediately without sequencing through the gears like my speedshift box does

Yes. Manual mode will get you almost the same acceleration as Sport mode, if you shift right, but will never be faster. Specs say 0-100km/h is around 8.5s, but I think it was closer to 8.0s in that clip. Obviously that is speedometer speed and nothing official. Love my car. My one colleague has the previous shape, with 2.0 FSi and a standard auto box. Does not compete.

I can honestly say I can see why one would love a car like that. If money was not a problem I would have liked to drive something similar, yet in the price range which I buy cars you'd only get older DSGs with high mileage and that can be risky. There is no denying that DSG will come out ahead of a standard autobox.

If I ever had to buy one of their cars the Passat would be on my top three list of choice, purely because it is rather understated and not over sold. However they are more upmarket cars, as most DSG models are, so from a budget point of view I'll stick to slushboxes and manuals. .. hopefully electric someday.
