Hi guys!

Long story short, I'm due to get my insurance payout, from our burglary a few weeks ago, this coming week. Now I need your advice on what to buy.

I need to replace a TV and a sound system. As a rough guess I've allocated R13k to these.
An HD PVR & an HP ProLiant N40L Microserver will be connected to this setup. Darkish room with no light behind viewing positions and roughly 3m viewing distance.

I'm open to any recommendations.

R10k Samsung PS51E550 51" FHD 3D plasma
R3k left for sound, recommend entry component system, but will need to up budget a bit.

Best bet would be to browse the weekly specials from Game, Makro and DionWired imo. Let that guide you towards your purchase.

Bad advice, not even the marketers know what they're writing on those ads.

Save about R3k and get a 46". 5" aren't going to kill you.

It's a huge difference. Plus the plasma will blow the 46" LCDs out the water, because they will be 5 Series. 6 Series 46" costs more than the plasma, that's where the picture quality starts.

If OP is just watching Blue ray and HD downloads. If not, total waste.

Thanks for the input thus far. I've surrendered to the fact that I will not be able to buy a good tv and a good sound system at that pricing point.
So for now, I'll go for something like this in the sound department:
LG Blu-Ray 3D Tall Boy Home Theatre System (BH6520T) @ +-3500
The tv however is still causing me a bit of a headache. The following choices is what I've come across:
LG Pentouch 50PT490 50" 3D Plasma TV
Samsung E550 Series 5 51" Plasma TV

Now, question time...are these 2 plasma's the best I'll be able to do at +-10000, and then secondly, are there any LCD/LED TVs which could compete?

You could have a look at a Panasonic plasma at that price too. The 42" models are R5500 and R6999 for HD Ready and Full HD respectively. Not sure what the going price for their 50" models are.

Yes they are. Just double check pricing on that LG (or was it another model there was confusion over?). I've heard excellent reports on the PS51E550. The only LED-LCDs that would compete would be higher end ones, like the 6 Series and up in Samsung's case. Problem is you lose 10", since 40" higher end LED-LCDs are around R8-9k, 46" around R12k, and still 5" smaller.

If you go to a proper AV shop and test in a dim test room/showroom floor (not brightly lit), I reckon you'll walk out with the plasma.
