avast what a blunder!

Within an hour of the release of the faulty pattern file, an updated corrected version was released.
Good going, quick acting from the Avast! dev team.

Actually, it took them about 5 1/2 hours to release the fix. It was a bad mistake and there is nothing good about the dev team. We are not talking about mickey mouse programs here either, we are talking about major products such as Skype, Adobe stuff, etc. How on earth could they had let that one out? Do you know what damage it caused? We had to spend lots of time helping clients because of this stuff up.

BS. I've got it on my laptop and on the office pc, and I've never had any problems with Nod32 picking up files incorrectly. If is really that bad why are you still using it?

Read again, I never once mentioned that Nod was bad - IMO it's the best commecial package on the market. If AMON (file system) and DMON (document monitoring) are set to "Potentially Unsafe" applications, which is a must with the amount of attachements that arrive from unclean mail senders and spammers, also some files that get dumped on the storage server by dumb users - It does pick up a lot of false positives, the only reason being that it is more secure than anything else.
As for Gary's "perception", yes it is only a perception. I've been cleaning up messy and infected computers for over 20 years and make a good living out of it!

My personal and office mail is on Gmail / Google Apps, so I don't have any such problems with attachments.

Well I gotta say, Avast is free and you get what you pay for....

They have basically told me that if avast deleted your entire harddrive's contents, killed your grandma and blown up earth that they don't have to fix it.

They accept no responsibility at all, ever.

luckily it has HP backup, I restored it so the lappy is working again.

But lost around a years worth of docs etc...

Has nothing to do with the coders or code. Screening procedures in place didn't catch it. Invariably the heuristics will catch other stuff too. If it catches stuff like adobe products then it wasn't tested well enough.

Pretty miserable failure in this case.

Besides Avast was never really highly rated in the first place. Educate yourself. Do some googling for anti-virus reviews.

I've never seen a single AV test that even remotely mirrors real life scenarios. Care to point me to one?

Well how could they possible fix something like that? They can't bring grandmas back to life

Hey it's free software, and it didn't force you to delete all those files did it?
It's a bad screw-up. But you screwed up too by deleting those files and having no backups.
