The news is in that Avatar; the James Cameron super movie about humans clashing with alien natives on a far away planet, has bumped Titanic off it’s perch as the highest grossing film of all time. As of Sunday, “Avatar” had raked in $1.292 billion worldwide, beating by $50.1 million the previous record held by “Titanic.” Both movies were directed by James Cameron.
His earlier blockbuster movie about true love on the most well known sinking ship of all time had held the record for 13 years, having taken in $1.242 billion at the box office when it was “king of the world.” It is interesting to note that Avatar has however not overtaken Titanic’s earnings in the USA however with the latest figures standing at $551.7 million, still $49 million short of “Titanic’s” $600.8 million.
The record-breaking weekend was the sixth weekend in a row that “Avatar” had grossed at least $100 million internationally. Of all the international countries contributing to Avatar’s success, China and Russia stand out head and shoulders with of course considerable movie going populations in both countries.
To be fair to Titanic though, keep in mind that ticket pricing today differs considerably from that thirteen years ago when Titanic was doing the big screen rounds. The 3D ticketing is also more expensive than conventional tickets with many movie goers opting to pay extra for the 3D experience. Avatar made nearly 65% of its earnings from 3D viewings globally.
When adjusted for inflation, “Titanic” would still come out on top, with its gross worth at least $2.5 billion in today’s numbers.
