I'm looking a used car with 39,000km and it's a 2008 model. I obviously took it to my parents to check, and they the mileage is high for the model.

On xloser inspection, I see it's a March 2008 - which means 19 months and the mileage is actually just over 2,000km per month.

Is this average?

High mileage is not always a bad thing.
100 000km on a car that travels highway is better than 50 000 on a car that travels in the city. Service record is also important. Not that you can trust either odometer or service record from a second hand dealer.

I drive 160km/day on highway(not Gauteng) to work and back.. haven't had a single issue with the car for 200 000km now.

i once read an article that said 20k km per year is average...

...also Jabberwocky is very correct, about the high mileage non-city driving, and low mileage only city driving

Thing is I wouldn't know how he got the mileage :/

Another thing I just learned, is that tyres are close on R20k a set ... erk!

20k? Bull****. That's X5 territory with 20" low profiles rated for 250km/h. And you only need to replace 2 at a time with a 2-wheel drive car.

I wouldnt worry about the mileage. I'd worry about buying a Volvo! Don't expect to turn any heads. Those tyres must be run flats which are unnecessary anyway. A set of normal, high quality 18" Bridgestones or Pirellis will set you back about R12k max.

Um. I phoned (Tiger & Wheel, Cresta). Hate when people don't believe or think kyou're lying :/

I know it was 235 wide and 19" ... I didn't know the profile, so he quoted me two different profiles that he had : one at R4500 per tyre and one at R5000 per tyre.

Perhaps phone around and see what price you can get for me, if you think you could do much better?

Actually, the car did turn a few heads while I did the test drive ;) It looks alot better than a standard T5 http://mybroadband.co.za/photos/showphoto.php/photo/13233/size/big/cat/500 and http://mybroadband.co.za/photos/showphoto.php/photo/13232/size/big with the large 19", sport kit, chrome pipes and alluminium side mirrors.

Same car btw - just one is taken in direct sunlight and the blue looks lighter.
