I just recently signed up a 24 month contract with Vodacom and I was advised by the Vodacom sales consultant that I shouldn't get the iPhone 4... because it rapes data.

I'm still getting the phone, no questions asked, but I would like to get a basic understanding of everyone's average data usage, from the online app junkies to the guy who just uses it as a phone.

Also, I would like to know how to limit my usage as much as possible; what apps/processes I should turn off etc.

I have a standard 110MB data package on my bundle, but I will DEFINITELY be upgrading to the My Meg 300. So in total I get 410 megs on the bundle per month.

Also, if someone could maybe advise if I need to step it up to the My Meg 600? I will be using the following apps (anong a few other I find along the way):

Whatsapp - This will be on permanently
TomTom
TeamViewer - Not that regularly. I will only be using it when I'm away for extended periods of time, which is seldom.
Email - connected to my work and personal email accounts
Weather reports
A few others, can't think off the top of my head now, but nothing seriously data intensive

Also, I think it imperative to mention, I work away from the office, and consequently wifi access is restricted there, so I will only have wifi access at home, which is in the evenings.

So... Please could you post your average data usage, whichs apps cream your data, which apps/processes I should turn off to conserve data, what you might guesstimate my data usage to be, and where I can monitor my usage?

Also, please advise on anything else you might find useful.

Much appreciated.

I mostly use wifi at home and only use 3G when I go out. I tend to turn off cellular data when I have access to wifi. So 110 for me has been fine. For people without wifi, I would say 300 MB would be enough for casual use.

As far as I know you do not need to turn off cellular data when connected to Wifi, as it will always choose this path when in range automatically.

You can also save data by turning notifications off for certain apps.

I went back to blackberry since I am a heavy email user. My iPhone4's email was set to check for new email automatically every 15mins. Not worth it if you have lots of email needs. So my iPhone4 is my iPod now! :-)

But you can manage with 410mb I suppose.

Enjoy your phone and get the "Talking Tom" app!

:-)

I still get small amounts of cellular data being used when I'm using wifi.

I have the 600 but get the 2 gig. If u want the best. Plus more data usage means less battery life...

The standard iPhone 240 offering has 250MB. I'm using that with a phone and an iPad - linked sims. It should be enough because at home I have wifi. But we'll see.

I have a 250mb package and have never gone over the limit. Had the phone for about 8 months. I have wifi at home and office but travel a lot so am often on 3G. I do make a point of not downloading apps on 3G. So the data is 90% for email and then some on phone browsing when not on wifi.

My average data useage is over 1GB - the data packages for the iphone sucks big time!!

Why don't we have something similar to BB - something like R65 for unlimited internet useage? WTF?

So if you load a bundle on your cellphone, you can use the same bundle on your iPad without tethering?

Probably because Blackberry run off their own servers (hence the occasional blackouts.)

BIS sucks balls, they route all their traffic through RIM which means even when browsing a website hosted inside of you house, your request goes via the UK(or where ever RIM is).

I agree with iPhone data packages sucking, but all cellular data packages suck... Since I've been using my iPad with cell c combo I have to force myself to use up my iPhone cap.
