Hi guys

I am going to start contracting for a company, and they asked me what my hourly rate is. So now I'm trying to figure out what a typical intermediate PHP developer's average hourly rate is. If any of you guys are php devs, or employ them, please could you give me a ballpark figure.

Thanks

Never really charged an hourly rate... But I would say that It would depend on your own skills what your hour can produce...

R250-R350 per hour seems about fair to start off with, given you have the knowledge and experience to be useful in that hour and given the work is plentiful.

I'd also say it depends on the amount of work involved... If it's a little bit of work now and then your hourly fee could be more.

I will add too that it depends on what you are working on... This is where your own experience would come into play... If it's somewhat niche (in terms of the requirements), charge real money for it... A lot of these development companies get contracts overseas and are getting paid in dollars, pounds and euros, what they pay you is more than likely a pittance of that!

Charge a project fee if you are unable to estimate time accurately enough.

Fee = time you think it will take X 2 plus 1/2

I personally charge R500/h, but that is because I don't need or like freelance. And also cos I'm a little arrogant.

yes. 500 and hour.. so that's 4 grand a day or 20 grand a week coming out to an average of 80k a month. yep. sounds average to me

That's nothing, I charge R1000 p/h and if its 1 hour and 1 min worth of work I charge R2000 :D:whistle::twisted:

There is no fixed answer. Typically the client has a monthly limit they can spend. Your goal is to get all they can give.
But, you must know the minimum you must earn each month to cover your living expenses and aim to get about double that amount.

For example, if you require R4000 for rent, R2000 for food, R3500 for car, R1500 for petrol, R3000 for other = R13000. So aim to earn R26000 in a month. That would require earning almost R33000 per month before tax. And that means earning about R250 per hour given that you may not more than 7 hour days and there are holidays and other events that may cut into your working hours.

This is just a guideline. Use your own judgement.

Sounds about right.

Our MD recently said that Cobol is nowhere near dead. The majority of the developers are though :D

Believe it or not, I actually know one IRL... Pretty sure he's one of the last as that guy is super, SUPER grey... Doesn't work anymore either as he made too much money way back when :)

all of those ****s did. now the next generation comes along and has to pick up their ****

A lot of banking platforms are still written in cobol, which wont be switching over to a new language any time soon.

Maybe I should learn some COBOL since I already write some PL/SQL "around" the COBOL stuff sometimes.
