I'm kind of new to the whole world of home ADSL. I've been using my tertiary institution's connection, which sits on an extremely fast connection (apparently all tertiary institutions sit on the same network, which is government funded, and exceptionally fast), but I'm looking to get the HomeDSL 512 bundle from Telkom. The cap apparently sits at about 3GB, so my query is what speeds do you land up averaging when you hit the cap. 20KB/s and below is acceptable, when compared to Dial-Up, so I can deal with that (it should take about a day to get a 4GB file).

Any help would appreciated.

While I'm at it, wasn't there a South African ISP that was providing a 40GB cap with an ADSL bundle they were offering!?!?!?

Once u hit the cap international is basically unusable, web pages mostly don't load its so slow. I donno if telkom internet ISP has a hard cap have heard they don't so if they don't local downloads should be uneffected. If u use any other ISP once u reach ur cap ur cut off from ALL internet activity till the next month or untill u buy more bandwidth. So ave speed after cap on international traffic... 0.2 kb/s if u lucky.

This never happened, there were 30 gig accounts but telkom changed the structure for billing ISPs. Basically it now cost R75-R90 per gig that they use and this cost is passed onto the costomers. So in effect a 30 gig account will cost R2000 now.

Exceptionally depressing news! I was hoping that while the connection does dip, not too such a degree that surfing and downloading becomes practically impossible!!!!

Yip, sorr... U can get uncapped IS accounts in the range of R1500 pm... Besides that...

MyWireless seems more and more welcoming. You may not get such a fast connection, but at least they won't cut off your link to the WWW!

Well only your international is cut off (if using TelkomInternet or IS account), and local stays unchanged

So if you are mainly using local traffic, then ADSL is an option
