I've had iBurst (pro package) for around 2months (since there is no #$%@#$% ADSL service in my area and nor does it look like there will be in the near future) and i'm trying to figure out what are "good" download speeds as a benchmark for comparison....

So...those of you on iBurst...please reply with the following:
1) Avg. download speed before capped?
2) Avg. download speed AFTER capped?

So far i've been getting:
1) between 300kbps to 500kbps
2) 30kbps to 70kbps

Is that good or do i still need to do some tweaking?

Hi FW

Should you want to make an accurate and usable comparison, consider the info below.

You will have to specify the details on which backhaul ISP you are currently using and how / where / which protocol / when you are measuring the bandwidth throughput, as each test facility will deliver vastly different results as the type of test, the location of the servers, peering of different networks, the time of day, shaping by iBurst and the backhual ISP and many other aspects will greatly affect the results…

To establish which backhaul ISP you are using: Ping www.google.com if it delivers a starting IP of 72 then you are using Verizon as your bandwith carrier and when it delivers a starting IP of 64, you are using Internet Solutions as your bandwith carrier and these will deliver vastly different results both to local and international sites. (Verizon is preferred)

http://www.ispd.co.za/TOOLS/speed_test/results.php - local

http://www.broadband-help.com/tools/speed-test/ - intl

These tests are rarely accurate and most local tests deliver exaggerated results, but generally you could expect an average throughput to the internet of all services / protocols of 250 Kbps (31.25 KB/s) with an iBurst connection, as the tower/user saturation issue comes into play, the RF issues, shaping and the poor availability of international bandwidth on their network.

Note: Even if iBurst advertises their access speed to the internet of 250 Kbps as 1 Mbps it stays 250 Kbps – see ASASA rulings against iBurst. The test located at http://www.iburst.co.za/default.aspx?link=account_speedtest is good for tweaking your iBurst connection as this will indicate your throughput to the iBurst network and therefore you should achieve a reading higher than 900 Kbps, with a properly configured connection. (when the iBurst network is stable)

1) Before capped - up to 125KB/s (after 8 or 9 at night till office hours)
2) After capped - no comment :)

Thanks for the info Michael!

Will give the tests a go. I did the ping to google and my backhaul ISP appears to be IS (64.*.*.*).

1) 80-130KB Depends on the time of day mostly, but almost all downloads that are multi threaded will get to 100KB, international. Local is similar. 100KB = 800kbps btw.

2) Also around 30-70, it does average about 7KB in most downloads.

I don't see where a 250kb average comes from, I've never had a download go that slowly. Perhaps on single threaded sources and certain protocols etc, but for surfing and downloading it's not the case. In my case at least :p

Getting a Verizon IP is very useful, I'm on IS atm though, they're becoming rare.

Yeah, sounds about right cause mine peaked at around 1000kbps.

Glad to see i'm not the only one then...

I would assume this would just be luck of the draw since this is handled by iBurst?? right?
