AVG Sees Critical Windows XP File As Trojan

AVG users were less than happy to see their OS reduced to rubbish because their antivirus chose to label a core as Trojan.

The file in question was user32.dll, which was recently recognized by AVG as the a banking Trojan, thanks to a faulty a signature update issued on Sunday.

Users were asked to delete the file or move to the AVG Vault. As expected, those following the advice would later find out that they need a system reinstall.

The fake Trojan issues affects both AVG 7.5 and 8 (free and full editions) users. AVG has since them posted a guide (available here) on how to recover the compromised systems. Virus definitions have been updated as well.

AVG's previous blunder dates from last month, when the antivirus software managed to successfully identify CheckPoint’s Zone Alarm as a Trojan as well.

Last but not least, we have a piece of advice for the Czech-based firm: guys, we know everyone says that Windows acts like malware, but it's really just a joke. Trust us on that.

I don't find this funny at all. I have been saying that AVG has become a piece of crapware for a while now. I loved and used AVG 7 and 7.5 for years. But 8 started giving me problems. I warned about the false positives... and it seems like there are tons of them now. This is just one more example.

Avast and Avira are no better. BitDefender is problematic. You might know me as the Free Software man... but if you need a virus scanner now... my advice is to use the paid for version of NOD32 (if you can afford it) or Kaspersky.

I did trial run F-Secure last year as well. It also came up with false positives. And the program is not cheap. But I do like the mobile version of F-Secure.

its not expensive? +-R500 for 3 user license?
the 2009 internet security is alot better.

Hmm, ja this is not as bad as NOD32 (about R647.52 per 3 license - anti-virus only)

Kaspersky I can get anti-virus only from Matrix at R170.00 per computer (plus I get discount).

I tested a ton of anti-virus last year... almost every one I could get my hands on. To be honest, only NOD32 and Kaspersky made my grade. Every one of the other ones gave some form of problem.

Problem with NOD is that we have a lot of false positives on our software being triggered because of the copy protection that we use. It's a real problem for us and turned me right off them.

I still run 7.5 at home. One free copy and one paid one. I'm not moving to Version 8 anytime soon.

Antivirus is only for windows
Linux FTW

Nice. You are making Linux look real good now by the way.

I'm running windows on my eee pc at the moment now without any anti-virus apps installed on it. As long as you have some brains you don't need anti-virus apps, never mind the OS or platform.

Can you do a blanket exclusion on that file name or on that folder?

The problem is not us using NOD32 but our clients. We have to contact ESET every time we do a release to get them to unblock the software. You would think that they would catch a hint after the first couple of times.

Unfortunately they don't. McAfee has been blocking the apup.exe file on the AutoPatcher site for more than a year now, despite numerous people showing them that there is nothing wrong with that file. The site is still listed by McAfee Site Advisor as a purveyor of malware. I think the only thing that works with them is court action.

I always told people who asked me to use Avast, as after using it myself I found it to work very well. AVG to me always seemed sluggish, and missed a heck of a lot of common trojans on a drive I once scanned.

I used NOD32 at my work, and the program worked pretty darn well.

nod32 FTW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What an anti virus program is all i can say.

What I like about Avast is the initial scan before Windows even properly loads when you first install it. Thats cool.
