It depends on what you want to edit, but having worked with both, I'd recommend Premiere Pro.
It a direct working relationship with Photoshop and After Effects. Premiere Pro also supports HD, whereas only Avid Xpress Pro HD will work with HD material. Premiere Pro also has direct DVD export.
Avid is considered an industry standard, and is used by more professionals than Premiere, but Premiere has a friendlier user interface, and is extremely versatile with different media formats.
Sweet, just loaded Avid Xpress Pro, first problem, i get a 'No audio card found on your system' message ... Apparently you need a second card (sound blaster maybe) if your one (Realtek HD) is not detected ... eish

I always get that error when I try using it. I think the pros in industry uses Avid.
