Hello, as a member of myadsl, and a adsl user, and a civilian of South Africa, i feel it my duty to warn you people about datapro. I have been a customer with them for a very very long time and can honestly say i've seen it all with them.

DO NOT, i repeat DO NOT choose datapro as your ISP. sure, they can provide decent prices and on paper they look very good. but try calling them to have a problem sorted out. they make Telkom look like pro's. (no jokes). they have a new "state of the art" support centre now in pretoria. not even the receptionist of datapro can get through to them, not to mention a mere mortal like me and you... once you eventually get through to the so called Network ENGINEER. and you've explained to him what adsl and linux is. and once you've eventually given up on them helping you you will turn to google to find a solution to your problem, google has more chance of having had the problem before than anybody at datapro.

you will by the time your problem has been solved (by yourself and google, not by datapro) have learnt more about linux than the entire datapro helpdesk combined. you will next time think "why bother calling?" but then the man on your shoulder will make you call them again and go through everything again.

not to mention, with telkom at least if you get to the same person somehow that you spoke to 10 minutes ago, they actually remember who you are and what the problem was, with d/pro, you will explain the problem EVERY time.

trust me, if you want to make Panado share price go through the roof, get datapro as a adsl ISP. it will give you endless headaches.

just a thought, use it, dont use it...

What's the problem? AIDS can be washed off in the shower, didn't you know?

ROFL stupid me!! sorry i change my comment to:

Avoid datapro like Aids ... if you dont have a shower!!

So what was the problem? i just can't think of anything to do with linux that has anything to do with them... Other than helping with setting up email accounts. If u had trouble installing or setting up adsl on the router then u should have called telkom. And anyway to be honest not too many people are familiar with linux IMO.

All they would need to be called for would be if your modem is connected to the exchange but will not connect to the internet or u not getting your emails or something similar.

I agree.

I still don't see your reply to what the problem was or is???

@albert123, are you suggesting that forumites should use TelkodemonopliesHindernet as their ISP instead? - nothing on this Earth would convince me to use TelkodemonopliesHindernet as my ISP - there are plenty of other ISPs available that I would consider instead of TelkodemonopliesHindernet.

As bad as DataPro might be according to your experience [I don't have any experience with DataPro], are you perhaps not giving Telkodemonopolies too much credit?

Where did he mention Telkom?

O/T: is it really worth the effort to type out "Telkodemonopolies" each time you refer to Telkom?

In his post at the start of this thread, according to my count, twice :).

Maybe Telkom was used as a comparison and not an alternative ISP to use. Anyway..

Yes, it is necessary for me to do so, thanks for the concern, I am quite happy to put in the extra effort.

Sure.

I tried DP for 6 months... my services came to about R5000 a month...

They are the WORST WORST WORST ISP I've ever dealt with when it comes to support and billing. (Even compared to Telskum, at least they bill me right).

I'm still trying to get my accounts sorted out with them and I canceled all my services in writing 6 yeah SIX times... I still get monthly bills for all sorts of things, and my statement still says I owe them R7500 and counting... even though I've paid and paid)

Not to mention thier 0861 373737 premium rate number (which I always end up calling from my cell, to try and sort out my clients cr@ppy semi-functioning uselless server based uncapped dsl setup) is seldom answered, and IF you do get though you end up talking to someone who's never even heard of Datapro's uncapped BDSL solution.

IMHO, they're one big joke... I've had enough empy promises from them to fully support what albert is saying.

Dear Abby,

I was wondering the other day about the AIDS-shower-cure (tm), what if I only have a bath - will that work too? Also, if I have sex with an AIDS chick at her place, and then find out that she has no shower, will it be OK if I run home and shower there? How much time do I have to do that? I am also concerned about a disruption in the water supply - if a pipe bursts, and the water supply is only restored later in the day, can I swim in the pool instead?

thanks

well dude i must say in the 2 years i've been using that "semi-functioning uselless server bdsl setup" i have been honoroured to once have gotten through to someone that new the server had linux on and not windows. i mean that must count for something ??

just some laughter: last week my one branch is down. so i check and notice the line is working, so it must be that "datapro server" so since i'm not near the box and nobody there knows about linux i call datapro (dunno why) hoping they can sort it out (dunno why i thought they will) but anyway the oke reckons he will call them. after about 6 hrs he decides he dunno whats wrong. so next morning i go to the branch and check whats up with the thing. after 1 minute i notice the netw cables has been swopped, one from router, one to hub. so i turn it round. give it about 3 mins to update dyndns and everything. all working fine. so i ask the oke at the branch what the datapro "engineer" told him to do, he had to swop the 2 cables. now call me naive but if a box just goes off without anybody fiddling with the cables, IT IS NOT THE CABLES BEING THE WRONG WAY ROUND. can computers change the cables around?? anyway so 2 days later the datapro guy call me very excited to tell me the line is now up and running. great service, i really cant wait for next time!

on your comment about the billing... it took me 12 months to get my home adsl line move to a personal statement from the company statement (it was ordered on my name as a private account, never once mentioned the company name)

hehehe, sounds just like them.

I once conned a techie into giving me the root password for the linux box, which was most usefull... I learned alot about how they set it all up... I changed the settings, so the box used our name servers instead of thiers and switched off that inssesant SMTP trap that they use, and that solved all of the mail issues.

They changed the root password eventually, but have left the settings in place, so now the only issue the client has is the routing.... they are seldom able to actually browse the internet and windows updates are a no go

i did the same. they changed my passwords after a while. 5 minutes later i called the guy and told him he's got 5 minutes to change it back otherwise i'm moving my account (i've been a customer for about 5 years then). he said its policy for customers to not have the password. i told him to fix his support desk so that tyhey can solve the problems then i dont need the password, untill then i want the passwords. he said he will give them to me "for now" and call me as soon as they have their helpdesk sorted out. i'm waiting now my 2nd year for that call.
