Axxess DSL line cheaper than Telkom?

4Mbps @ R359??? Did anybody successfully transfer their line from Telkom -> Axxess? Is the process hectic or instantaneous (no loss of connectivity)? How are they able to provide these lines for so much less than Telkom?

I did. As mentioned in one of my other posts elsewhere, I had also noted that Axxess are cheaper than Telkom and WebAfrica. So I transferred my line to them, upgrading from 384kbps to 4Mbps at the same time.

In actual fact, I requested the transfer to be done on the 1st September, because my 2-year contract with Telkom only expires on the 22nd August. But within about four days, I noticed a massive speed increase! A few days after that, Axxess phoned me to say that the transfer had been done.

My only concern is what I will see on my next Telkom account - that will be the test. Will Telkom have waived the contract cancellation fee, etc. I was going to wait until receiving the account before posting my experience, but seeing as you asked ...

Concerning the price, it appears as if Axxess are offering bundled prices in an unbundled manner. If that makes sense. If you add the line cost to the cap, you'll see that the total pricing works out cheaper than Telkom or WebAfrica. There are cheaper bundles, but not all do transfers yet, and not many are as flexible as Axxess. They do not place any restrictions on the use of the line, whereas Cybersmart (I think) specifically state that you may not use another ISP on their line.
 
It depends on the bundle you're interested in.

Axxess 4 Mbps line = R359 pm.
Axxess 3 GB cap = R179 pm.
Total = R538 pm.

Telkom "do 3" = R554 pm. But that's it - 4Mbps + 3 GB only. No higher cap. But with Axxess, you can combine any line speed with any cap (as is the case with some other ISPs). Plus the previously mentioned flexibility.

But they're offering the line without data being mandatory, that's not something that Telkom offers. You're free to take the line only and use an ISP of your choice. Unless they purchase the package, and sell the data part of it off separately? In which case I'm sure many people wouldn't mind if they don't want to be forced into subscribing to xGB data monthly.

The telkom 3gb is almost certain to be 6gb - same with axxess? I used to use Axxess back in the day of the 30gb accounts and they had their problems but were still pretty darn good. :)

Right now I've got my telkom 3gb, my IS 2/30gb, and a small handful of WA prepaids - oh how I long for the day of one affordable account!!!
 
You don't have to sign up with Axxess at all, you can use any ISP, that's the point. Great idea too.

The problem with those Do packages is that they come with max 3GB, and only on the 4mb line, which is useless for me. Now you cna sign up to the cheapest ISP, and get a cheap line from Axxess.

On Do2 and Do3 you get double your stated allocation, so to really compare any 3GB Helkom offering you'd have to compare it to a 6GB offering by another ISP.

As far as I know, the only combo that comes close for 6 GB is that of SA Inet, but then you have a registration fee to pay.
 
You may be able to get 6GB on a 3GB TI account, but don't they put you on some "abusers" list if you do this too often ? I know they used to do this when they were really relaxed on capping.
 
That isn't guarenteed, people get capped at random amounts too, and they could decide to hardcap it again at any time. Not worth having that ISP account tied to your DSL line.

As long as they don't cap below the stated amount on the package why not enter into a month-to-month agreement and cross the bridge where softcapping is no longer the case when it comes?

That's subject to change. Remember at one point people were getting 10GB+ on those. Also doesn't allow for much flexibility. Some people for instance might want a 4Mbps line with a local only/prepaid combo and this is the cheapest way to go about it. Besides, why pay more than you have to to Telkom when there are ISP's trying to do good things.
