Hi there everyone!

Well I'm fairly new to this and i was reading the forums and have made up my mind to get the DSL384 with an axxess 30Gb. But i just want to clarify something with you guys.....on the axxess pagehttp://www.axxess.co.za/l.php, states that "port shaping is : P2P".

I want to know if axxess is FOR P2P or AGAINST P2P.

Its not up to Axxess to shape - its Telkom that does it. You should still get decent speed, say 50% or higher on limewire etc

Does this mean that you get throttled 50% of your download and upload speed?
 
I've been assured that Axxess 10,20 and 30gig accounts are identical to Telkom 3gig accounts if that answers your question. I'm not an axxess user yet, but will be soon ...
 
Grim|Reaper - from what axxess have said to me, its all open - go nuts basically - no throttling or blocking of p2p..

as a newbie to adsl myself - todays me first day - I'm checking through diff appz, IRC seems okay, DC++ ditto, gonna dig out a torrent client and go looking..
 
Yea, torrents and p2p is working nicely on their accounts. Normally when someone states that the port shaping is on P2P (for instance) it means that THAT port is shaped more aggressively than others. Because the list of ports that do get shaped is usually long (and unattractive to the novice user) to read.
 
problem with edonkey is that the person who has the file needs to be online till you finish it, if he leaves you hanging and you have 99% of the file then you're out of luck

What? I think you're thinking of another program. If you only have 1 source for the file you're looking for then yes but most files have hundreds if not thousands of sources.
 
re axess & p2p - p2p seems to work very well - if you're coming from IBurst for instance, you get awestruck at the sudden flood of apps that DO work :)
dc++ and torrents are all happening bigtime, everything else works, don't worry.

killadoob - I'm into obscure and non mainstream stuff that generally isnt around much on torrents or edonkey, so dc++ is The App for me. Grabbed 7gigs or so in the last 3/4 days already. So I'm a satisfied customer :)
(and btw, seeing as I AM satisfied, unlike on IBurst, where u had to struggle and fiddle, complain and do 'workarounds' - when I do need more b/w, I got no problem about paying for it, coz I'm actually getting the good speeds to do what I want, so buying extra doesn't feel like a ripoff at all..)

Yes I must say for me the ED2k network is the best ... besides the stuff normally stays there for quite a while sometimes years ... it's your safest bet ...

However I'd suggest you don't use eDonkey ... why is'nt anyone using eMule? ... that explains the very very few south African flags I've came across .... been using it for 3 years already !!!! It's free and community driven ... there are a lot of mods for it ... mods offer a lot more functionality and useability ...definitly the best P2P app for me ... so I'd suggest you use eMule !!!


b.t.w I promise you there are more eMule users than eDonkey users !!!!

trouble with either emule or edonkey - cant remember which - is that my bps spy remover (from bulletproof) wet itself at one (or both of them) and tagged a whole bunch of what it considered spyware appz and files that had come with the install.. again, dont recall which of the two it was that tripped my anti-spyware alarm systems..
 
must have been eDonkey ... :D ... eMule is pure .... :D ... seriously I have protowall/peerguardian installed in addition to an Antivirus + FireWall and Spy removal .... as for eDonkey I've never even considered downloading it.
 
I ONLY use eMule!

This is by far the best P2P application! No spyware, easy to use, searches extreeeeem fast and you get a looooooots of results for everything! No broken files AT ALL!

While I was with iBurst I tried all (almost) P2P applications and I have to say that nothing comes close to eMule, although none worked with iBurst anyway!

I am awaiting my ADSL tomorrow! Yes, they phoned me for tomorrow! Can you believe it! On Sunday! So waiting impatiently here ... :-)

yeah and R150 activation fee ... and no prorata ... so if you start today you will lose about R450 instantly (2/3 of the month + R150) which is like 5-6 months the difference compared to axxess ... and I guess axxess after 6 months will be even cheaper so ...
