Hi all,

Has anyone else experienced excessive throttling lately by Axxess?

I am on an uncapped account and tend to use about 50-55gig per month. I have only used more than that twice in the last year, while several months have been +-30gig.

It is now 4 April and torrents are clearly being throttled. I have checked this at various times through the day and night, peak and off peak, week days and weekends. Im averaging about +-4kb/s regardless.

I have read the Axxess acceptable use policy: https://www.axxess.co.za/aup.php
In terms of an uncapped account, all they mention is that peer-to-peer, torrents etc will receive low priority during peak times. Fair enough, no problem with that. But then why have I had +-4kb/s for all torrents since last night (Friday) till now (mid day Saturday). This has also been the case every night this week. I was waiting till the weekend to see if this changed, but it hasn't.

I know of people who download hundreds of gigs every month. Time to begin shopping for a different ISP after being with Axxess for too many years to count.

I guess we can continue being the butt of jokes from friends and family who live abroad where they quite literally run their entire house through their internet connection at speeds that SA will never see. Yet here we are begging and pleading that when we purchase a 4mb uncapped account, we somehow think we'll get what we pay for.

With that low usage why not get a capped account?

I use to be on a capped account about 2 years ago and at the time it worked out cheaper to go the uncapped route based on my usage at the time. However now you are right, it may be better to go back to a capped account. I'll run a few numbers this weekend and see what works out better.

I currently have an axxess 4mb line+uncapped bundle which comes to R499 total per month. So I need to see what I can get in terms of capped + line for R500 per month.

Afrihost has the capped 50+50GB with 4MB line for R458 a month.

Also check out WebAfrica and CrystalWeb as well.

Webafrica has the capped 40+160GB with 4MB line for R399 per month. The 160GB you have to schedule for 12:00 midnight to 6:00am

^^ This

... I've got an axxess capped account and was getting full speed on torrents from 00:00 to 06:00 last night.
That's what capped means.

Recently access have been a bit screwy like they put us on the uncapped for a while. Torrents are taking longer to start and daytime streaming has been poorer.

When it works, their capped is great.

Not all capped are the same, especially if you look at WA/CW capped accounts that are shaped though.

That doesn't compare favourably with Axxess 50+50 (special) for R189 on 2Meg.

I will be changing over to a capped account this coming week.

However what still pisses me off is that im still being throttled on my current axxess uncapped account. We are clearly in non-peak times and I am clearly not a high use user. Yet im still being throttled.

Good bye axxess. I hope everyone else putting up with this BS also decides to leave.

Having the exact same problem. I cant even stream Netflix or Youtube at 240p anymore its pathetic.

I called them about this twice last week which lead to them raising the issue with MTN, who literately replied saying no sorry this is our policy and that's that.

I have now moved on to a capped account 150gb and this has resolved the issue and its actually cheaper now. There is no throttling on capped data and my Netflix is streaming at 480p now on my 4mb line.
