Has Axxess truly become such a poor ISP to use? I'm trying to update some steam games and my download speed hovers at around 261 KB/s. I'm on an 10mbps line and when using Vox I had full download speed (900 to 1000 KB/s). I bought an axxess uncapped account to use for the last week of this month to try it out (having had one in the past) and I am seriously not impressed. Are they shaping all downloads?

Well you're currently using a home account during business hours. If you want day time downloads upgrade to business.

Well it isn't advertised as an after-hours account, nor was it sold to me as one

The simple answer is YES.

Was on their 4mb/s uncapped account for a while, it was excruciating even youtube buffered!! Cancelled and signed up for Afrihost 100Gb capped account and it has been true bliss.

I swear I read this atleast once a day. /facepalm

It is not the ISP's fault, that you do not know the difference between a Home and a Business account. It is your job to read the fine print. They just selling a service.

I don't agree with the level of shaping these days on ALL South African ISP's but your argument is truly just invalid.

It's not an after hours account. I'm sure your gmail and browsing work perfectly.

All home accounts shape downloads during the day, as businesses get priority. That's why they pay more. Home accounts are designed for people that get home at 18:00 and use the internet at night.

The Axxess account I had couldn't even do that properly, never used it during the week. Weekends only and everything still buffered on a 4mb/s Uncapped account. If I ever used it during the week it was no more than 3-4 times a month well after 18:00 to watch the odd funny clip on youtube or the Oscar trial

Don't be an ass. Nowhere on their website do they say that there is degraded or poor performance during the day, under the AUP they say

The condition of our network is evaluated regularly in order to give all customers the best possible internet experience. Should we find it necessary we will manage customer's accounts who have used more than the average user, this will be done by our Axxess Protocol Manager. Should your account become managed we will only manage your Peer to Peer, HTTP download and NNTP traffic. As your usage returns to that of the average users in your group (account type/speed) and network conditions allow for it the management on your traffic will be relaxed.

So would that mean I've been "managed" in one week? Perhaps that is the case (though I received no notification) and if I have been "managed" then the ISP is ridiculous because I've hardly used the account.

I'm not saying they are perfect. They suffered the same capacity constraints as Afrihost, but his experience is normal for a home account. His expectations are a bit high for the money he is paying.

Actually if you check their website they don't mention that their home accounts are shaped during the day, they only mention that if you exceed some average you get managed, which I find unlikely as I've only used the account for a week and have hardly used it for downloading.

Oh, and my update is now in double digits. Sorry but I don't think my expectations are high, I think they are a crap ISP.

EDIT: Home or Business, 13 KB/s download speed (which it has now dropped to) is pathetic, and I'm not talking about torrents here. Not even MWeb was this bad. As I said I thought I'd try out axxess and there is no way I'd consider switching.

If you click on the AUP it's VERY obvious. As you quoted "The condition of our network is evaluated regularly in order to give all customers the best possible internet experience." sums it up. No need to read anything further into it or try and find any other meaning to this. Its not rocket science.

I mean if this is your first ADSL line+account then forgive me. However, if it is not, then you sir are a fool. You honestly cannot think out of all the ISP's in sa, which ALL of them shape home accounts, Axxess wouldn't because they didn't put it on the purchase page. That is why there is T&C, that is why there is logic in this world, that is why you do not purchase anything without reading the T&C and that is why u are now in this situation. Yet, you are ranting and raving here about something the rest of the country has to deal with on a daily basis.

Then you're welcome to try any other ISP. All home accounts have restrictions. That's just the result of making them so cheap. Even your beloved MWEB throttle when you reach a threshold.

If you want a decent get account upgrade to Axxess business. most of us in this thread are on various business accounts from different ISPs as we value day time performance.

Actually that line doesn't sum up ANYTHING, and if that is what is supposed be explaining their shaping then it is in violation of the consumer protection act as it isn't in any way describing how the service operates. And no, it is NOT clear in their terms and conditions. The only thing that's clear is that I'd be throttled if I'd exceeded some average usage. If I've been throttled after a few gigs then they're a poor ISP, end of story, and I'm sticking to Vox.

Do you work for them or something? I've had better experience with other ISPs, NONE have been this bad, I asked here to see if others have the same experience and I'm told to just accept it and that's how ALL home accounts are? That is not true.

For someone that's joined this forum a decade ago you aren't very knowledgeable.

Home accounts aren't made for day time usage.

END. OF. STORY.

Thank's for the suggestion Chevron but I'd rather just stick to Vox. My experience with Mweb was better than Axxess but I'm not using them anymore. I switched to Vox uncapped which was also better, after using Vox uncapped for a while I then switched to their after-hours uncapped but needed something for these two weeks to use at home and thought I'd test out Axxess' uncapped account while I'm at it. It seems to be worse than the other two uncapped accounts I've used in the past and hence my original post. I've never had such poor performance so did not expect to be told "that's what you get for using a home account" and that I'm an idiot for not reading the T&Cs which don't actually cover anything other that being throttled.

I don't. I would of loved to, to get that free internet. Sadly I pay for mine just like you. All I am saying is you arguing about something you know very well about. All home accounts are shaped. The only thing that differs is the level of shaping. However, complaining about actually being shaped on a home account and not being informed of it, is a futile exercise.

And in those ten years I've never experienced such poor performance, home account or otherwise.

Shape all the home users in order for Jimmy at work to be able to stream that funny cat video at 1080. God forbid he couldn't do that at 10mb speeds correct ?

Only in SA :)

Actually I think it's more a general issue right now, I'm on 4mbs Business Uncapped and getting poor performance as well. Extremely so, where as even on a home account last month daytime was still better than openweb and after hours was as good as it got. Right now? Some gremlin in the works, going to have router restart party.
