I've slept on my stomach since as far as I can remember, but recently my back has been aching after sleeping and it aches a while during the day then goes away. this morning it's particularly worse than the prev night. I read somewhere that sleeping on your stomach is the worst position for your spine and you should sleep on your back... I've tried that tho, it's nearly impossible! I was awake for like 40min, then I rolled over to my stomach then finally slept... Its annoying me now... must I just grin and bear it on my back and hope I will sleep, or must I try get another mattress or pillow?
I'm 18 btw so I don't think it's old age hitting me. :p

IIRC sleeping on your side is a fine alternative.
I also struggle to fall asleep on my back. I have found that a litre of whiskey helps though :p

get a GF.

Have alot of sex. it releases a hormone that makes you sleep easier :)

...After sex you will forget about the bad back

Before trying different pillows and expensive mattresses. Try sleeping on your side. I too used to sleep on my stomach. Over the years I started sleeping on my side and now can't fall asleep unless I'm laying on my side. Belive me, if you're tired enough you will fall asleep in any position :D

As Pitbull said - mattresses.

Your mattress might not be firm enough - hence the sore back. It happened to me as well when the mattress we slept on was sagging. Sore backs until we replaced it with a new one.

Could also be a spinal issue... I remember I experienced similar symptoms to you, and I also sleep on my back/side... unfortunately for me, it turned out to be a slipped disc in my lower neck :(

Get a proper mattress, i used to do the stomach thing. Then the side thing, but then if i am sleeping on my left side, my right leg bends over and its more left than the rest of my body. This caused so many back issues for me.
In the end, I got a proper mattress, without knowing it, i started sleeping on my back.

Have had minimal back ache since then

Tone up, do some tummy exercises to strengthen the stomach muscles, this will help support your back.

Start doing yoga. It has helped alot for me in strengthening muscles. Also increases flexibility :p

Also make sure you have a good pillow.

Sleeping on my side helped me! Even tho I had to swop sides sometimes.

Put a pillow under your knees when you sleep on your back, and a pillow between your knees if you sleep on your side. I've found it helps a lot. On your side with the pillow you instantly feel your legs loosen up. Also, sleeping on your back without a pillow for your head is pretty comfortable.

If that doesn't help as others have said, try a new mattress. Or turn your mattress around/over.

Everyone sleeping on their side tosses from side to side :p

I have another problem lately and no idea if it's a cause for concern...

I awake at night when I have landed up on my back with my hands on my chest. But then my arms are numb (dead?). It's so bad sometimes that I can't move them. Wife says it could be because my biceps are so big that it cuts off the blood flow to my veins. I highly doubt this as my biceps aren't even being pressed against my body. Could it be low blood pressure or something? Anyone else experience this before? I'm actually beginning to freak out about this as it has been happening more and more frequent now.
