Ones son is trying to upgrade his PC, its a P3.

Yes, yes, but he is doing it on his own, out of his pocket, so more power to him. Or, as it may be, less... He bought a nice box for it, but the plug on the power adapter is different so it will not plug into the mother board.

Suggestions?

yup you will need a converter

although normally you can remove 4 pins for the smaller power cord

not sure what your setup is though
