I've spoken to sentech this morning and they say the contention should be 128k:20, now is this rated on your connection to the tower or local bandwidth or is it for intl bandwidth ???

I'd guess this is for both international and local. Or they would have specified :) I mean if they don't then you can easily tell them they ommited important information on your connection as they don't state a seperate contention ratio for international sites :)

Apparantly they don't differentiate between local and intl bandwidth, my main worry is with local bandwidth, the 128:20 is based on both intl and local combined on one pipe.

Yes I believe they are one pipe but then that isn't very bad since ADSL is 40:1 local and international or close to that. 20:1 is very good and you won't get a 1:1 ratio to local sites doesn't matter what you do it's just to expensive :)

All i want are decent stable local gaming pings, i'm expecting a call at 3pm from one of the sentech guys to get some info on expected ping times.

Please guys give up on contention ratio as a basis for determining performance. As long as you are getting good bandwidth and ping times does it really matter what the contention ratio is?

i dont care if i get 4.5kb/s on the 512k package, as long as I dont pay telkom [8D]

Perdition, the only information we have to go on at the moment is the contention ratio's, if you have info on download speeds and ping times please share it so we can also make an informed decision !!!

Sorry if this has been answered before but 128k:20???

Is that KB or Kb?

Ok, with my ADSL I can get 54k a sec, so devide that by 4 (128k) I should be getting 13.5k a sec when downloading.

Now assuming I am alone I should get 13.5k a second, but what happens if there are 20 people using the tower near me, will I now only be able to download at 0.6k per second. What is the best and what is the worst, of course assuming that it will rarely be the best or the worst?

Could somebody please clear this up for me as it is bit confusing and I think alot of other people that are unfamiliar with contention ratio's will appreciate the information.

Thanks

Your best will be 16kB/s and your worst will be 0.8kB/s now the intresting thing is this is devided at the Tower as far as I'm aware so not only do 20 people have to be logged on but that has to be to the same tower as well as each tower has it's own output to the IS backbone(so I've heard) so lets say the tower has 35mb/s output you would need around 1000 users to get that 20:1 thing on that tower at once. I hope this helps, so in reality you should almost always get 13-16KB/s unless it's peak time and everyone is on at once(which shouldn't ever be the case or very rarely)

Thanks for the info,

I assume it is 128:20, so it will be 256k:20 and 512k:20 for the other packages too?

I hope that is the case though you'd have to ask a Rep for this info, As the Connection goes up so does your average d/l so it is possible the Contention ratio goes up i.e 128k:20 ,256k:30 , 512k:40 But only a rep could answer this:)

Cerberus, according to Sentech's call desk the contention ratio is applied on their pipe to IS and not on the tower.

Now if ProAsm could possible answer this question and also the estimated count of people that will be able to reach a tower assuming a radius of 5km?

Err, so what is the difference if it is per tower or to IS (Sounds like the speeds would be slower if it is to IS)

Some research must have been done, so please answer [:D]

Well if that is true then it sounds like the bottleneck is the IS backbone. All I have to say is Wow the largest Backbone in SA is our bottleneck mm.. we rock :)

Well if I remeber correctly the ping from the DBN tower to JHB(Via IS) is around 22ms... pritty damn fast so I don't think it will be slow at all Shifty as for estimation that depends on the area DBN will naturally be lower than JHB :)

Hope that Helps
