With 30gigs at R199 I really thought we are getting somewhere with broadband. Sadly I was naive.
I can remember the days when the rest of the world had ADSL and we had none here in South Africa. Then something happened. After many many years, Telkom probably could no longer take the pressure from not implementing it and there was ADSL - after what seemed to be a lot of words for years and little action. Also, when there was no ADSL and Telkom were busy advertising ISDN as some great technological thing, ISDN was actually something ancient to the rest of the world. (like an oxwagon instead of a car)
Now we have ADSL, but it is in plain words 'a crap deal'. It's like being on a cell phone. You can't talk to long because your talktime might run out because it's horendiously expensive.
Now if the government could just deregulate the industry so that people who can provide real values to others could do so. It won't even cost them a lot of money. They basically have to change the ancient laws so that it's in-line with the rest of the world, sit back, relax and watch how companies really do go the last mile to customers instead of ignoring the needs of customers and the country in general.
Why does it seem that it will take tens of years before things change? Maybe the government can't let go of the revenue they get from Telkom. Maybe it's a conspiracy so that the government can control telecomunications in SA. Maybe Telkom is bribing, kicking, screaming and throwing it's weight around to hold on to the power they have. and the 'maybe's' can probably go on and on. I wish things could be different - at least like the rest of the world.
