Backing up emails

Eish I need to format, but I want my bookmarks and emails. Using Thunderbird and Firefox, I don't have Outlook or IE so don't need to worry about them.

Last time I saved the Thunderbird folder before I formatted, I can see the pop3 folder but can't open any of the files. Don't want this happening again.

What am doing wrong?

was this folder that you saved in your 'documents and settings' folder (the one that contains the thunderbird profile folder)?
that's the one you need to back up, iirc...

@ TD: Maybe the next time you have thunderbird on how about installing Thunderbird portable that way you just move the folder anywhere http://portableapps.com/apps/internet/thunderbird_portable
