Is that Synology enclosure necessary? Damn expensive...

Would an HP Microserver suffice?

Certainly, but I like a stand alone Nas I don't want a pc running the whole time.

You can run a NAS OS such as NAS4Free or FreeNAS on the microserver and it will work out cheaper than a proprietary NAS like a Synology or QNAP.

Synology make pretty good kit though. They have some nice capabilities and I have always found them very reliable. They might seem expensive for home use but are quite reasonable in a business context.

Definitely that's what I did for years. I don't like it. I like having a headless thing chucked away that I know is solid and doesn't take much electricity.
