Greetings everyone...I have two boys starting Grade 8 next year and the missus has decreed that they get new backpacks. While I personally an inclined towards the Targus range, it would appear that the Totem bags are 'recommended' by the school. There is this one: https://totembags.co.za/collections/school-large/products/style-glitch
And then I came across this from Thule: https://thulestore.co.za/thule-chronical-backpack-28l?___SID=U
And this: https://thulestore.co.za/thule-narrator-backpack-31l-3067?___SID=U

The Thule bags are on special, and are cheaper than the Totem bag at its best price at the moment. Any reviews/suggestions would be really appreciated.

Tell me about it!! But where to get Karrimor bags in SA? A quick search at the usual suspects shows them as out of stock :-(. Any clue where I could look?

Shops that sell school clothes, remember buying mine at a place that sells only bags at The Glen, a decent flea market might have.

You want mine?

 I would take in a heartbeat...but then I would be on 'lockdown' for a long time to come! Best I go around and have a look at a few places! Thank you!

The Targus bags at least have a lifetime warranty, so if they fail you just return it. Had a bag for 7 years and it had a failure... returned it and got an instant swap out.

Karrimor bags are ridiculously good. I have one (small/medium daypack) I bought for about R395 in 2009. Used it all around South America, central and east Africa, been my weekly squash and tennis backpack, SanParks ranger monthly activities- full days in the park for snares and alien species removals- for the last 8 years.
I kid you not that this daypack looks exactly the same as when I bought it. I checked it now and it says Spirit 30 Coolmesh. See if you can find one similar.
I am never much of a fanboi of anything, but this stuff seems to be properly made.

Totem for the shape (books fit better). Karrimor because they last longer.

Edited to add: I've never known any backpack to last a teenager all the way through high school. Partially due to wear and tear and partially due to fashion. So don't worry too much, you'll be shopping again soon ;)

My son has been using this one for 2 years and despite his best efforts has not yet been able to wreck it. It is really well made.

This lasted me throughout high school.

This is the bag I had. I had 10 subjects so it really was the perfect bag since I had a ton of books and notes.

I had a checkers cheapo for my highschool career. That and one of them plastic space cases. Both are still going strong. I am not sure why or how they have lasted.

I use this for my multiple nieces and nephews school needs. Around R900 each and quite good quality material.
