Backup Battery/UPS for Garage Door

Hi Guys

For the last 3 days the power has gone off just before my wife and I are suppose to leave for work (6:15). Is there any way I can purchase a UPS/Backup battery pack to let us at least open and close the door twice while the power is off. I’m not sure if a normal UPS would work, but what about a backup battery pack?

Any info will be appreciated.

A friend of mine put a small 600 UPS on his - he says it works fine.
 
It depends on your garage door motor (sorry, but I'm not too familiar with them)

If the motor itself is a 12V or 24V unit, it will be possible to run it off a battery (most gate motors work that way) If the motor is a 220V unit, you'll have to connect a UPS to it.

See what kind of wattage it needs, and work from there.

If you have a double garage, upgrade one of the drive units to a 24V battery backed up unit, it may be more economical than installing a small UPS.
 
@Paulr - Not sure of the specs, will check today and see what I can find out.
@psc - Any name of place to buy that you can recommend?
 
I dunno, I think those motors draw a lot of juice in a very short time. The UPSs are not designed for that.
 
Most garage door motors require 350W but the newer digidoors only need 250W. Check the spec plate on the back of your motor.

Check out www.altpower.co.za. They do some nice battery solutions with delivery and installation. Phone them though as I got a discount after applying a bit of pressure.

I'm using their 3KW, 6 battery solution to run my home (geysers, stove and other elements excluded). They came out to my home, did an evaluation and quoted, free of charge. After I placed the order, delivery and installation happened within a week! Impressive for SA!

So how much was it in your case?
 
If you consider a small UPS just be aware that some of them run for just 15min. Just inquire about the run time. The UPS can empty its own battery while inverting, so by the time you get to the garage it may have stopped working.

R 12,100.78 Less 10% = R 10,890.70 + R 1,500.00 for installation into my DB. With a 12 month warranty.

The best part about these are that they require no maintenance. I don't have to go and check diesel and oil levels. I don't have to replace filters, I don't even have to worry about any noise interrupting the Sharks thumping who ever they happen to be playing on the day. The system does everything for me. The changeover from mains to batteries and back again is so fast, my lights don't even blink!

If something does go, it would ten to one be one of the 25A fuses (like the ones you get in your car) and they cost about R 2.00 to replace.

In 3 to 5 years time, I will need to start replacing batteries. R 12Gs over three years... this system will have paid itself off well before then.
 
Induction motors can draw up to 4 X the rated power on startup and then there is the power factor which can be as bad as 70% (Cos Phi 0.7)

Marantec Garage door motors have a solar powered motor, comes with batteries and two small panels... proper german stuff!!!
