I have a question regarding backing up content on my pvr.
I have a family member that is playing international rugby.
Every game supersport is showing i am recording. But now i am running out of space.
My one p2 decoder is full(98%).
and my explora is already on 25% full.

Multichoice don't seem to want to help me. I've been told to watch it on my pvr.
And when or if the pvr breaks, well all the content will be gone.
I have spend R3500 on pvr hardware and am currently paying R740 a month.
On top of that Supersport decided not to show the Top 14 french rugby this season.
Now if i want to access the old content i must plug in my old p2 pvr, phone dstv to activate it bofore i can watch it.
It must be against the law to prevent me from making back ups.

What? Am i going to sell 4 year old rugby games to make a profit?
Any suggestions anyone?

Thanks

One way to get them into your PC:

Fit a TV card to your PC, or get a USB one. Connect the PC to the PVR using RF or composite video+ audio cables, as appropriate to your setup. Play the saved videos on the PVR and use the PC to record the output into disk. Viola!

Once you have the videos on PC disk in a usable format, delete them from your PVR, make backups onto another disk, and you're done.

Cool.

Will look into it tomorrow. Any tv cards you can recommend?
And will this then copy HD?

Typically no HD. The signal down the HDMI line is encrypted.

There are converters for HDMI to Component Video (RGBsync) and in most cases the encryption is dropped. If course your PC capture card must accept component video + audio input.

There are also devices that decrypt HDMI, but they are not readily available. One Israeli company made a famous device that's now banned by most countries. HDCP capture devices also exist, ie capture the signal between your PC and the HD monitor.

Thanks Arthur.

I did a bit of research. Not much on the SA sites.
But found a few promising options on the US sites. Will pick up my card tomorrow.
Will also give feedback.
It's just sad that one have to go through all of this.

I am really disappointed in Multichoice. Quick to take your money, after that they couldn't care less.
Eish!!

Well, that wasn't to difficult.
With a bit of research and a bit of luck..
I'm recording dstv in HD.
No splitters, no converters. Just a tv card and some software 'tweaking' :)
If some of you are interested to know how i will gladly give a walkthrough:D

@Roester I've got a few questions to see if it is worthwhile.

Is all your saved content on the PVR in HD format?
How does your TV cards compression compare to that of the PVR? (e.g. 150GB on PVR = 150Gb on PC)
Do you playback all the content and record it in real time?

I haven't had time to play with all the settings.

Is all your saved content on the PVR in HD format?
No. I have 32 games on the pvr. Only about 15 in HD.

How does your TV cards compression compare to that of the PVR?
Not a clue. The pvr has a 500gb hdd. Some used for catchup, some for recording and so on.
So i cant say what size one game is on the hdd.
What i can tell you is that one game of 90min comes down to about 8gb on my pc.

Do you playback all the content and record it in real time?
Yes. That is the only way. Press play on decoder, rec on pc and let it run.

I just tested the card on my explora and all works 100%
Now it is going tio take me some time to record all 32 games on my p2 and then the 20+ on my explora:sick:

Thanks Roester and Quantum Theory.

Since its is such a lengthy process it will depend on how valuable the content is to you to go through all the trouble.
So it is definitely not for me.

Please do, I'm very interested in HD content being able to be recorded, without the need for expensive toys.

The only hardware you need to get is the Avermedia HD tv card Model C027
I got mine on bidorbuy. Did not see it anywhere els. Maybe you guys will have better luck.
It was R1400.

Go to this link and dl the file (50mb).

http://www.mediafire.com/?6mfxeifodf4ad9b

Insert the card in your pci slot.
install the software from the zip file you dl.
Replace the .exe file also provided.
reboot.
then install drivers.
And Bob's your uncle.

Now this works 100%. Before i replaced the .exe file i couldn't record. Got the HDCP message.
After replacing the .exe file everything fine.

As far as i know it is only the Avermedia C027 model that works.
If someone has another model they can try it and give feedback.

Hope this helped.
