Backup your Data Reminder

Good idea - one copy somewhere else isn't much of a backup.

It's taking forever to back up just the last few years to Google - local is lekker.

For your Google Applications , Drive, Gmail, Photos etc. you can go here:

Store it in a safe place.

Also consider if you get taken out by a truck tomorrow, wil those you care for have access to your photos or information you store.
I save mine on multiple hard drives. Don't want AI making clones of me or my family in the future.

What's that?
Mine is

Local (completely local, different drive in the same PC)
Local on storage server
Offline on 2 external drives which are cycled weekly with one being kept offsite
Online on own domain. I might not have FULL control of this, but a lot more than your typical cloud storage solutions such as OneDrive and Google Drive

That's a bit more than 3-2-1. 3-2-1 refers to 3 copies including the working one.

Oh and also for people working with important stuff and worrying about "bit rot" .par is an excellent tool that takes care of copying damaged data.

I don't consider the same copy on the same PC to be a backup - anything other than drive failure will results in the same amount of data loss. I also largely discredit the 4th, as I don't have full control over it, or even physical access for that matter.

I'm strongly of the opinion that if something is truly critical, you can't have enough backups of it. If something is very important to you, the more copies the merrier. You'll also be surprised how little is TRULY critical. Losing all photos of your wedding (surely the most important photos you have?), for example, might suck big time, but it won't change your life. I think it's safe to say that unless you work with media for a living, most people's TRULY critical data can fit on a single CD.
