I stay in Wierda park Centurion and every after noon from just before 17.00 up until 19.00 my Adsl connection drops between eight to 12 times in that period and comes back after a minute or two, is it as a result of load shedding or are there other causes? This has been going on since Friday last week.

Possible Causes:

1) Congestion on the Exchange
2) Faulty Line
3) Shaping by ISP
4) Lack of IPC capacity at the ISP
5) Line Interference - Line getting wet
6) Line Interference - Electrical Interference (power or nearby lights).
7) Line sharing - Telkom has split your line to share with a neighbour.
8) Line hijacking - a neighbour has hacked your wifi :D

latency is fine as well as up and download speed and i did tracert test and not showing congestion, and it only happens between 5 and 7 pm daily.

Do you have any street lights or outdoor lights that are on automatic timers?
Where is your router situated in relation to other electronics, DB boards, pool motors, lights, etc.

A negative to all the above . I have not moved or changed anything and this problem only stuck out its head since last Friday for the two hours between 5 and 7 pm, we have been having load shedding for the past week but would assume that exchanges were equipped with backup power.

hmm, Try another ISP. Afrihost has free 1GB accounts.

I'm going to put my bet on Telkom though. Their exchanges need to be upgraded...I have very slow speeds between 19:00 and 21:00 every freakin day.

Doing a pathping shows high latency on the 2nd hop, which indicates the DSLAM/Exchange is congested.

What are your modem's noise margins? Sounds like noise levels go up during those times which causes your modem to drop sync

Which make and model router do you make use of? Please also mention which lights change on your router when the service drops out. I'd hazard a guess it's related to either your WiFi, sync, or auth dropouts and confirming router LED's should point you in the right direction.

You assume incorrectly. if you are having issues with your line and you know load shedding is going on, it's probably that.

Telkom used to have their own power supply, but they became lazy (much like Eskom) and started relying on Eskom infrastructure to power their exchanges, which simply means that if the power goes out, so does your telephone line (or ADSL)
