Uncapped cheap local ADSL would be a bad idea from a service providers point of view:

Telkom charges fortunes for local datalines as well. If there is affordable uncapped local ADSL for the masses, they would start to use local sites to the extent that service providers are going to be bancrupted by Telkom in order to keep up with bandwidth demand.

As the major ISP's are lagging behind MyADSL in getting Telkom to answer on their bulk data rates, one has to assume they are in cahoots with Telkom in milking the consumers and corporates.

:-)

PS: Maybe somebody at Telkom will realise that if they start giving free ADSL for local use, they will recoup the costs by selling more bandwidth to the ISP's!

Uncapped ADSL is a bad idea, period.. seeing as broadband is pretty 'new' in SA the people using it for the first time will download everything humanly possible and push the line to its limits, whereafter the novelty wears off and they wonder what they can do with their connection..

Not entirely uncapped, just much higher, decent caps, no 3GB nonsense.

And then you get people like me that are waiting for a cheap uncapped option and are paddling along at 64kbits/sec while I wait.

Uncapped cheap ADSL is excactly what I want.

Like Mad was saying his right, if everyone gets UN CAP ADSL, isp wont make profit out of it, since you'll abuse and download maybe 100 gig month, or more. if UNCAP adsl was out there for about R600 I'd definatly sign up for one, since its value for money but i'd not pay R300 for UNCAP adsl since I know it would be CRAP service to get.

Is statements like this not putting fuel to the fire. Telling ISP's and Telkom that there are people out there who are willing to pay rediculous rates, as long as they (Telkom and gang) give just a little bit? Why can't we have it all? Why always settle for second best when there is a whole world out there not willing to settle, but demanding it all, and they seems to get it. What happened to controlling pricing by supply and demand? From a statement like this I would think that a Second Operator will have absolutely no effect on pricing.

Clearly I'm having a bit of a "Monday moment".

Yes and everywhere else in the world they are able to offer cheap uncapped adsl running at 4 times the speed and turn a profit...

I have to agree - with a structure similar to overseas countries ISPs could compete to deliver the best service at the most affordable price. I'm sorry if this means ISPs have to work harder to earn a buck but competition breeds fairer prices for the consumer.

Besides, not everyone needs or wants ADSL so normal dial-up services will be popular for a long time to come especially if local calls prices are reduced or eliminated.

LOL, I read somewhere that they going to be stopping the use of dialup modems in the UK lol :D

Doubt that will happen any time soon - too many people still use them.

I tried to find the article too no avail but I swear I remember legislation being passed to phase out 56k dialup completely in the UK.

Then again, maybe I dreamt it? :D

Then you were'nt the only one who had that dream.

Yep it did happen, since they wanted to revamp everything digitally throughout europe if I understood it right. Consumers moaned or summin and in Europe etc. unlike South Africa the consumers do have the power :(
