Keep it as a temp drive.

And do regular backups besides. Spinrite is a good proggie which you can use to check on the health of your HDD on a regular basis.

But trying to run Spinrite at its max setting on a 600Gb HDD will take yonks... Best and quickest is to purchase a 200Gb HDD, and HDD tray as well, and then use it to dump your data quickly on a regular basis.
