Bad sinus

Gotta love MBB. Sinus advice on a tech forum...

Anyway, I'm suffering from sinus today and was looking for some solutions. I don't really like taking meds.

For those of you that think Surv0 idea is a little primitive, its actually quite common (although maybe in other cases somewhat more refined).

Take a look here: http://thenosebidet.com/

I don't have one of those, so will be trying the straw thing today.

I've heard a lot of guys have great success with that. Also consider the most recommended nasal spray is just salt water. One should also avoid any non-chronic or non-salt based nasal spray as a rule as the others cannot be used for more than 5 days else they cause your nasal problems to get worse

Long term use of nasal decongestants may damage cilia inside the nose and cause atrophic rhinitis.

The key to sinus is to avoid congestion. My mum sniffs up water every morning to clear her nasal passages. She swears by this.

In fact, the environment where you work/live may contribute to your sinus.

Before we moved to Silverton, my SU had no sinus attacks, but after we moved in, she also start to get sinus attacks.

You have a very good point here. Since moving from Joburg to London and now on the coast in Kent which is a large change in altitude, I can't recall the last sinus headache I had. My wife was always pretty ill to the point she could barely work. Since moving to the UK she has been able to work full-time. I think living in the Eastern Cape or similar environment would have the same benefits. Unfortunately, most people have few options on closing where to live.

I'm an asthma sufferer and tend to get a lot of crap of my lungs even though I'm a non-smoker so I find a nice cardio-workout by doing some hill climbing with my mountain bike helps to also get junk out of my nose - and if I cannot cycle the morning then I also do "snort" some H2O while showering.

The major cause of sinus for us in the Helderberg and Stellies is chemical spray drift from the neighbouring farms

Mine are destroyed. Always had a problem with congestion. About 1.5 months ago it got worse for a while with pain and swelling. Went to the doc for antibiotics and surprise, surprise they did sweet %^#*$ all. Then about 2 weeks later I got what felt like a major head cold. When that finally broke I was spewing up gunk for 3 days and 1 night constantly . It's eased off now but it's still not right. Quite bad today actually.

Sinotab nasal spray worked. Can only use it for 3 days or something though so it's just to give relief for a short period. Made my nose bleed a bit though.

thx guys this will help me alot as well.
i suffer from Sinus but more the nasalized when i talk

Just one question Surv0 do you do this every morning or how often?

Agree with wcoetzee above - take TEXA.

I hate 'chronic meds' but gave in and began Texa, one every morning - sinus/hayfever has been (mostly) under control since!

I would avoid just taking the general sinus meds, like sinutab and the likes.
All these drugs do is dry out and harden our sinus cavities and this may not remove the problem all together.
You need to get some antibiotics just incase, this will help any infection in the upper cavities which causes the drips..
What i do is a mix a saline solution, a little pinch of salt, some luke warm water and some bicarb of soda. The bicarb helps break down the mucas and the salt helps clean infection.
There is a trick to taking this though. You need a straw, suck up some solution, just a bit, block the bottom of the straw with your thumb to stop it running out. Get down on ur knees and put the crown of your head on the floor so your nostrils are facing the roof.
Then gently let the solution out of the straw into ur nose, letting it run down the bridge of your nose into your upper cavities(which kinda sits above your eyes and behind in your brow). Give it a few seconds to get in there and move around, then grab a tissue or watever and let it out. Often a little blow helps.. Rinse and repeat.

This might sound a bit strange and over the top but it WORKS. Ive been to many nose doctors and well this is the best advice. I live with sinus problems daily, and once a year i have an attack when the weather changes. These attacks leave me partially blind in one eye because of the pain. Using general meds just make it worse.
My dad has just recently had to have holes drilled into his forehead to let some of his 'problem' out. I feel im going down the same road.
I try and use daily spray as well, called Flexinase, this is reletively mild, keeps heyfever away and inturn sinus problems.

You actually get Sinus Douche bottles for this (they come with sachets - but when they run out do the salt / bicarb mix). I have had 2 sinus ops already, and my drainage holes made slightly bigger. So far its been about 18 months since the last op, and using the douche really helps out.

Remember that all the meds actually make your nose more sensitive by drying out the membranes in your nose and sinus cavities. As gross as it sounds, the best time to blow your nose is after or in the shower, with all the steam and humidity. Also the douche works best for me before I get in the shower. I try and suck it all the way through my nose and out my mouth for a thorough rinse. Oh and for the extreme sufferers, add a drop or two of johnson & johnsons baby shampoo (the yellow one). There is apparently something in it that takes out any fungal infections u might have. Tastes terrible tho and makes a hell of a froth!!

Got this at one of my local Pharmacies http://www.enttech.com.au/prod_flosinuscare.shtml

I have suffered from sinus for years. As a child having a stuffed up nose was normal for me. Found out that one of the major factors that affected my sinus was my diet.

Dairy, wheat are the main aggravators.

Really, it's like everything good to eat will just make it worse. Ice cream? Had some good chocolate ice cream the other day, the next was just awful. Felt like Arnold in total recall, only could feel that massive weight on my nasal cavity. Bread? Good rye bread is pretty hard to find

There was a time when I completely stopped with all of it; cheese ,milk ,wheat, ice cream, you get the idea. Went to see a phyto therapist in stellies. She gave me a tonic which helped also. For two months I was amazed. Hell, I could smell if food was being cooked 3 rooms away. Which might seem funny, but since I've been a laaitie it's like I grew up with almost no capacity to smell and breathe easily.

Obviously it didn't last. Couldn't stay away from croissants and cheese...and everything else.

So, I know what affects my sinus and I just wanted to let you guys know.

I also have used sinutab and other medication and usually just stopped as it would lose it's effectiveness after a while.

Well I've had a spectacular cough for 2 weeks that is related to my sinus and allergies somehow. Probably going to the doc today to sort it out. And I live for cheese (as in on pizza) this has been 2 weeks of hell :(

I've been trying the flixonaise thing for a few months now on GP's advice. Does't work as well as id like. I have the post nasal drip (allergies) every night plus mild asthma. The fluid drops to my chest so I'm coughing up slime/phlegm every day. Fun! I'm thinking of going to see a good ENT soon. I've had enough of this.

Go buy yourself some Pharyna made by Natura @ Clicks or DisChem. Take it before you go to sleep & when you wake up in the morning.
