Anybody have this issue when it rains soft or hard that your internet gets either really bad to impossible to use, i am not sure if it is assia managing my line badly when it comes to rain or if it is a exposed cable. Should i ask telkom to investigate for a exposed cable?

Yes, talk to Telkom. I have the exact same issue, but BOTH my ADSL and my voice line drops. They replaced all cabling on my property, yet issue persists, now they have to go down the cable all the way to the exchange to search for the fault.

Thanks will do.

From experience ... it takes time to sort this.

In my case, we (Telkom and me) discussed the merits and the rest for a few months, till I blew a fuse, then they sent out a few employees (parading as techies), and the result was they couldnt find a problem because the rain had passed.

Finally, a techie called Shawn came out. He explained that he needed to get into properties and the like - so it would take some time, but a week later - done.

That was about 4-5 years ago, and never had the issue since......

Lightning and stormy weather all contribute to electromagnetic interference. In situations where your line stats (Attenuation and SnR) are good then the weather will have a minimal effect on the line. In my case it causes small amounts of packet loss here and there. If you line is just barely reaching its target speed then you will run in too trouble during rainy weather. Electromagnetic interference will result in signal quality loss, meaning the SnR value on your router will be affected. If you are already running with an SnR below 7 or 8 ish then you will more than likely lose your connection all together. Given, all of this can be avoided if cabling was better isolated and sealed to prevent interference but hey, its Telkom and they just moered the cable in the mud somewhere.

My snr has been low between 5 and 6 after a storm that happened 2 days ago during the storm i had 70% packet loss and a snr of 3.9 which caused my line to resync at 9 megs after because of lovely assia, now everytime it rains the internet is terrible and constanly below 6 snr. But keep in mind my snr was always between 6 and 7 due to interleave so it was already terrible but the storm made my situation worse.

You have exposed copper somewhere along your line, can be a biatch to find & takes time.
