Ban infant formula - Motsoaledi

Banning advertising definitely, but you can't ban formula.

And what do they propose doing about women who do things like use coffee creamer, powdered milk or cow's milk? It's highly questionable whether soy or goat's milk should be used either. Better to stick to formula if breastfeeding is a problem.

If someone is capable of producing milk and they use a pump I'd expect them to continue producing milk. In some cases though it runs out early.
 
This works in the UK as they actually have decent maternity benefits. My cousin was off for a year (9 months paid, 3 unpaid). By that time baby has a strong enough immune system to try deal with all the germs that go with a creche.

But as far as I know they do not breast feed for only 4 months. Yes I know you can pump it out.. how much do you have to pump if you leave home at 6:30 and come back at 6 at night?

It's not that much, but probably ideally you'd want to be pumping it out at regularly intervals like a normal feeding schedule.

this just proves my point that education is the single most important priority for this country.
without it, our leaders will continue to make decisions based on poor research and will be easily swayed by parties with fine-sounding agendas.
 
Why didn't they just write a letter to Nestle requesting some sort of "neonatal supplementation fund", supply banking details and be done with it.
 
I think there is more behind this than just the health of the mother and baby.
Underprivileged mothers can get formula for free from the government, and they get an allowance for each child they have. This is a costly sum since you can imagine that some people will have as many kids as possible to milk this system and in the end it is costing the government millions each month.

Lets be pro-choice and allow women to abort their babies, but the second the child is born now all of a sudden we are concerned about his/her well being???? Okay, whatever.

They wanted to announce AIDS as a figment of the West's imagination a couple of years back under Mbeki, my theory, to not hand out those very, very expensive drugs to every Tom, Dick and Harry. Now they want to ban formula... why?
Most mothers do not have enough milk to fulfil the baby's requirements, and you need to supplement. How in the world are the poor people going to get their hands on Soy, goat milk, etc. Is the government willing to substitute formula for the more expensive replacements?

I do not know a single mother that did not need formula at one stage or another, there are just so many reasons why you would need to lay of breast feeding for a while. In my wife's case, the baby's sucking damaged the nipple, to such an extend that if you do not constantly treat the nipples you will find that they can become infected. Treatment involves applying some cream to strengthen the nipple skin but also rest once the skin has been broken to give the body time to repair the damage. Enter formula and a breast pump.

Many other reasons have been named above, it seems the minister is as clueless as a rock on this subject, or has a hidden agenda. I have no problem with banning advertising but it is a moot point really, formula sells itself out of necessity and banning adverts is going to have no effect IMHO, only a couple of mommy magazines that loose advertising revenue.

Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi is an idiot who does not know what he is talking about. My three children are all adopted from birth - what was I supposed to feed them?

Outside of this, it's also proven that breast is not always best - both my sister and cousin did not provide enough milk for their children to thrive - because my sister slavishly listened to the nursing sisters (breast is best, breast is best, just persevere) her poor child looked like a starvation victim until we persuaded her to start supplementing (and them completely supplanting) with infant formula. Her child started thriving within a week.

I will probably get flamed for this, but very few women genuinely need to used formula, most can breast feed. It's just easier not to. It's like all the ceasers now-a-days, most are not for medical reasons, but the women just find it easier. Breast milk has a ton of advantages, and most mothers should breast feed.

I totally agree with you but you need also remember that in this country women are often single moms and/or the sole breadwinner in the family, so often it's not that they don't want to breastfeed - it's that they don't have time to! Breastfeeding may be difficult because they needed to return to work quickly in order to earn money to take care of their families. In addition to wanting to ban infant formula the minister also said it was "criminal" that working mothers did not receive "at least four months" of maternity leave to exclusively breast-feed their babies.

hence better education and curb advertising/promotion of formula

can't ban everything because people can't think for themselves
 
we have got a HUGE AIDS crisis in this nation and infant formula is an easy and safe alternative. I think that this man should rather better regulate the quality of these products, than ban them outright.
