A petition to ban Metallica from Glastonbury Festival has been started following the news that frontman James Hetfield will narrate a television series about bear hunters.

As previously reported, Hetfield, who is a keen hunter, will provide the voiceover for The Hunt, which will premiere on June 8 on the History channel. The eight-part series will see a group of hunters visit the island of Kodiak in Alaska to search the Kodiak brown bear. This has led to the creation of the 'Remove Metallica from Glastonbury Festival for their Support of Bear Hunting' Facebook page, which has gained over 23,000 signatures at the time of writing.

Speaking to NME about their reasons for setting up the campaign, a spokesperson for the group said that the campaign is not personally against Metallica, rather their support of big game hunting. "This is not hunting for the table, for food or survival. Bear meat can be eaten but it rarely is. Nor is hunting for conservation," said the organiser, who is currently anonymous. "The Kodiak Bear Hunt is done using 'traditional' methods, long/compound bow and Black Powder single shot rifles. These rarely result in a "clean kill" as you would get from a high velocity hunting rifle. Often the animal is wounded and is put through a great deal of pain that they may or may not survive. Animals that have been wounded are far more dangerous than healthy ones."

The spokesperson continued: "For a great many people the very idea that it is OK to hunt is abhorrent. To even raise the question is ridiculous. We share this planet with other living beings. It is our duty to protect them from their greatest threat, ourselves. I would like to add that this is not particularly against Metallica, I would do the same if any other band found itself in the same position. With fame comes responsibility and much as I applaud the work that James and the other members of the band has done in other causes, this does not let them off the hook in this case. It is also a great opportunity for them to stand up for a cause and make a statement against big game hunting."

I like Metallica, but I cannot support bear hunting.

I like Metallica, but I cannot support bear hunting.

I have long been aware of Hetfield's love for the kill.

On hunting, if it is an animal we can eat - rooibok, springbok, kudu - I say go for it PROVIDED the meat is properly and completely harvested. But there are some animals - while edible that I find simply too majestic to kill for sport. Sable. What a beautiful beast. I will never hunt nor eat nor condone killing.

Remarkable and respectable predators fall into the same category. So, for those of you who want to know why the Big Four should be rated Megadeth, Slayer, Anthrax, then Metallica - this is why... None of their frontmen (or drummers) are årseholes.

Mustaine is a bit of cock, come on..

So they don't want Metallica at the show because Hetfield's going to narrate a History Channel show?

(And don't tell me it's because he hunts, otherwise they would be picketing every show. If he wasn't going to narrate, they wouldn't be crapping in their panties.)

Fcking Hippies indeed.

Metallica.. the "rebels without a cause" meant be all hip and "with it" who consequently went crying to courts to bring down MP3 sharing.. yeah, **** them.

A lot of people are less than pleased, to put it mildly, about Metallica headlining Glastonbury Festival.

A Facebook page was launched to ban them after attendees learned that NRA member James Hetfield would narrate the History Channel's chronicle of an Alaskan bear hunt. The Arctic Monkeys' Alex Turner expressed puzzlement — "Could you have Metallica in the hippy [sic] nucleus?", he asked Time Out London). And Mogwai went full-on fightin' words, calling them "****e" and dubbing Lars Ulrich "unbelievably bad" to Gigwise.

To that, Ulrich told U.K. magazine Metal Hammer, "Bring it on." Blabbermouth points out that Metallica doesn't seem to give two ****es about all the negative press. "We're fairly thick-skinned," he says, adding that if it were Mick Jagger (who said, "I've seen them live and they're going to be great"), or even Turner, that counts. "But if some guy in some other band ... it's like, 'Huh? What? Who are you?'"

With regard to being Glasto's first metal headliner in the festival's 44-year history, Ulrich says, "Glastonbury is like the Holy Grail in England, and we're respectful to that. But if somebody sits there and talks about petitions or what some other guy says, there's a point that it just becomes ridiculous." ....
