Bandwidth throttles 2010

World Wide Worx MD Arthur Goldstuck estimates SA's bandwidth needs at least two terabits a second by the time 2010 rolls around, or four times current capacity, in order to meet the demands of the World Cup and internal growth. “There is a huge appetite for high-speed connectivity in business and among consumers.
If many of us weren't already throttling ourselves we would already be using 4x capacity, never mind 2010, plus telkom is throttling all of us so in fact we have no idea of our true present bandwidth needs.

The Department of Communications did not immediately respond to requests for comment or information.

Typical, will not get us to 2010.

Weird, earlier this week they were saying that building more than 1-2 extra cables would not make business sense as they would undermine each others viability. From this is looks like we need 5 extra cables just for the next few years, beyond that who knows?

It doesn't make business sense for Telkom as it would erode their profits.

Skip : tbh it would enhance their profits. But its short sighted business practice on the part of Telkom, maximising profits from a small number of clients, rather than getting a smaller profit from a much much larger number of clients.
