Hi - I am getting a DG834G router etc and want to know if there's a way to work out how much traffic is being used per ethernet point ie. I have 3 housemates, and we're all sharing ADSL, I need to know if anyone's hammering the downloads and making us reach our 3GB limit?

I'm not a network guru (clearly) so if it's a dumb question, be kind :)
Thanks

Try downloading MRTG (multi router tracking graph) or something like that.
it should be able to give you usage stats on each port being used ;)

Thanks. Went to educate myself on Google about this and came across this:
<snip>A feature I miss is the SNMP support. There is no SNMP support at present for the DG834 nor it is previsted for the forthcoming firmware :( so I had no luck trying to use MRTG.<snap>

I did find another site of interest via this...others that have this series router/modem may find it useful:

This site is dedicated to the Netgear DG834(G) switch/firewall/modem/router series and its hacking.

Um so how did you eventually manage to track usage? I have the same router and would also like a way of tracking bandwidth usage as well as logging it.

Besides adding a proxy server for your PC's to go through I can't think of any method.
Using squid proxy server I thnk you can limit/throttle the amount of bandwidth a connection is using.
Then you can limit each housemate to 512/3k and then use a log analyser on the
squid log to get the total usage by each person - but i think it might only report http traffic... (which would include downloads but not P2P..)
Good luck :)

How about if its not per person, but just generally how much has been uploaded/download, i.e. to keep record and log no. of Mb's uploaded and downloaded, especially to keep a check on the cap.

I just gotone of them DG834 wireless routers :)
my flatmate is pretty good with that type of stuff so I'm gonna let him loose on it and
see if he can get any usage logs/stats out of it .
Anything happens I'll post back here

Nothing from my side just yet, except to say that I finally got my 834G last week from the UK, installed it, and it's awesome.

It came with a UK 13A plug molded into the transformer brick, as well as BT microfilters. Spoke to Duxbury and they swopped out the items no problem - really impressed.

A bit off topic:
On my network I have a Win2k PC and Apple Powerbook 12" (running off the wifi leg, using WPA).

Just installed VNC (free) so now I can access PC-only apps that I need to use from time to time. (Server here:www.realvnc.com, OS X Client: http://sourceforge.net/forum/forum.php?forum_id=217619).

Looking forward to hearing feedback on per user/IP bandwidth usage.

PS Is it normal to have so many port scan and DOS attempts showing up in my logs...firewall is on?

Firewall rules:
Enable: Yes
Service Name: Any
Action: BLOCK always
LAN Server IP address: Any
WAN Users: Any
Log: Never

sorry guys - no go on the monitoring thing... :(
I left my firewall rules as they were, and yeah, I also get a couple evrey now and then.
Mostly from the same machines, soI reckon it could be a virus on the okes system ..
need to play with the firewall tonight as might be hosting a Nascar game ;)
